Hockey Night: Moorhead holds steady at No. 1

Jan. 4: Mason Kraft's OT goal boosts Spuds past STA; Holy Angels survives scare; Hermantown's Francisco notches another shutout

Moorhead 2, St. Thomas Academy 1 OT

MOORHEAD - Mason Kraft's goal 42 seconds into overtime lifted Moorhead past St. Thomas Academy 2-1 on Saturday at the Moorhead Sports Center in a matchup of the state's No. 1- and No. 2-ranked teams in Class 2A.

Kraft corralled a loose puck in the high slot, then turned and unloaded a blistering shot that sailed through traffic before beating St. Thomas Academy goaltender Cody Niesen. Kraft, a senior committed to Minnesota State, tied the game at 1-1 with the lone goal of the third period. His 18 goals are tied for the Spuds' team lead.

William Dosan scored a first-period goal for No. 2-2A St. Thomas Academy (11-2-0).

The No. 1-1A Spuds (13-1-0) haven't lost since their opening game of the season on Nov. 22. 

The teams met previously this season, and Moorhead's 4-1 win on Dec. 28 launched the Spuds into the No. 1 spot in Class 2A.

Holy Angels 3, St. Louis Park 2 OT

RICHFIELD - State goal-scoring leader Henry Lechner scored in overtime as Holy Angels avoided a major upset by slipping past St. Louis Park 3-2 at the Richfield Ice Arena.

Lechner, a senior with 25 goals, also forced the extra period by scoring with 3:59 left in regulation.

Second-period goals from Leo Schmoll and Brennan Hogan gave St. Louis Park (8-6-0) a 2-1 lead entering the third. 

No. 7-2A Holy Angels improved to 11-2-0.

Hermantown 4, Eden Prairie 0

EDEN PRAIRIE - Junior goaltender Bryce Francisco made 22 saves and notched his fourth shutout of the season as Hermantown eased past Eden Prairie 4-0 at the Eden Prairie Community Center.

River Freeman scored three unanswered goals in the first period as the No. 1-1A Hawks (7-4-2) bolted to a 3-0 lead. Ford Skytta added a second-period goal for Hermantown.

Francisco's performance moved him to the top of the state with a .955 save percentage.

No. 12-2A Eden Prairie dropped to 6-6-1 with the loss.

Winona 3, Red Wing 2 OT

RED WING - Myles Bruemmer scored a power-play goal in the third period and another in overtime to help lift Winona past Red Wing 3-2 at Prairie Island Arena in a matchup for the "Barge Rope" rivalry trophy.

Damon Noland stopped 31 of 33 shots for Winona (6-3-0). Ethan Anderson and Grayson Redfield scored for Red Wing (0-11-2).

Maple Grove 0, Totino-Grace 0 OT

MINNEAPOLIS - Totino-Grace goaltender Gavin Covrig made 41 saves and Zach Price, his Maple Grove counterpart, stopped 38 shots as the teams skated to a 0-0 tie at the Brooklyn Park Ice Arena.

The shutout was the first of the season for Covrig, who ranks fourth in the state with a .941 save percentage and sixth with a 1.56 goals-against average. It was also the first shutout of the season for Price.

Totino-Grace improved to 6-4-1 with the win; No. 18-2A Maple Grove dropped to 6-6-1.

Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 3, Mahtomedi 2 OT

STILLWATER - Bobby Thornton scored 15 seconds into overtime to lift Cloquet/Esko/Carlton to a 3-2 triumph over Mahtomedi in a matchup of top-10 Class 1A teams at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center.

Thornton also scored a first-period goal for the No. 2-1A Lumberjacks (12-1-0). 

Cody Loida scored in the first period and Laken Decker in the second for No. 10-1A Mahtomedi (4-8-1), which took a 2-1 lead into the final period.

Hill-Murray 5, Minnetonka 2

MAPLEWOOD - Hill-Murray scored four unanswered goals in the third period, two of them into an empty net, as it remained unbeaten with a 5-2 triumph over Minnetonka at Aldrich Arena.

Riley Zupfer opened the scoring in the second period and had one of the empty net goals for the No. 4-2A Pioneers (10-0-1). 

Emerson LaRoche scored late in the second period and Brecken Koland 30 seconds into the third as No. 12-2A Minnetonka (6-6-1) took a 2-1 lead.

Chaz Lentz had a goal and two assists and John Kelly three assists for the Pioneers.
