Hockey Night: Monticello rallies late to stay unbeaten

Jan. 3: Moose beat Minneapolis on two goals in final 3 minutes; STA eases past East Grand Forks; Rosemount notches 14th victory

Monticello 2, Minneapolis 1

MINNEAPOLIS - Monticello scored both its goals in the final 3 minutes as it rallied to beat Minneapolis 2-1 on Friday at Parade Ice Arena in a matchup of teams that entered the night with a combined one loss.

Levi Welle tied the score at 1-1 with 3 minutes remaining and Nathan Poeppel scored the winner with 24 seconds left to keep No. 5-1A Monticello (11-0-1) undefeated. Poeppel, stationed in the crease, fired a rebound shot past sprawling Minneapolis goaltender Griffin Simpson.

Wilson Lamberty's power-play goal with 1:24 left in the second period put No. 12-1A Minneapolis (8-2-3) ahead 1-0.

Simpson made 29 saves for Minneapolis; Logan Blahnik had 14 for Monticello.

St. Thomas Academy 4, East Grand Forks 2

EAST GRAND FORKS - St. Thomas Academy scored four unanswered goals through parts of the first and second periods as it cruised to a 4-2 win over East Grand Forks at the East Grand Forks Civic Center.

Cole Braunshausen scored late in the first and second periods as the No. 2-2A Cadets (11-1-0) surged to a 4-1 lead.

Cooper Hills and Ryan Clauson scored for No. 8-1A East Grand Forks (6-6-1).

Rosemount 4, Prior Lake 1

PRIOR LAKE - Junior forward Quinton VeDepo's second-period goal held up as the game-winner in Rosemount's 4-1 a triumph over Prior Lake at Rosemount Ice Arena, the state-leading 14th win of the season for the Irish.

VeDepo's goal, his fourth of the season, put No. 9-2A Rosemount (14-1-0) ahead 3-1 entering the third. Christian Garrity added an empty net goal with 1 minute left.

Gavin Lind scored the lone goal for Prior Lake (6-7-1).

Luverne 6, Rochester Lourdes 3

ROCHESTER - Blake Sauer scored twice and Landyn Lais had a goal and three assists as Luverne outlasted Rochester Lourdes 6-3 at Graham Arena.

Sauer, a junior forward, scored consecutive goals in the second period to put the No. 17-1A Cardinals (9-2-1) ahead 4-0 entering the third.

Rochester Lourdes (5-4-1) scored all three of its goals in the third period, including two from sophomore forward Nolan DuBois.

St. Michael-Albertville 7, Roseau 5

ROSEAU - St. Michael-Albertville scored five power-play goals, three coming after a major penalty, as it defeated Roseau 7-5 at Roseau Memorial Arena.

Roseau (7-6-1) opened the scoring with a power-play goal by Chase Bachleitner. STMA (5-3-0) tied it when Tanner Esterberg scored a shorthanded goal with 58 seconds left in the first period.

The teams traded even-strength goals in the first two minutes of the second period before the Knights got power-play goals from Esterberg and Levi Antoine for a 4-2 lead.

Roseau's Jude Wittrock, who recorded a hat trick, cut the lead to one just 25 seconds into the third. However, STMA scored three times on a major power play to take a 7-3 lead with 6:01 left.

The Rams scored twice in the final 1:40 to make it 7-4.

Esterberg had three goals while Antoine netted two for the Knights. Owen Volkenant recorded three assists.

River Lakes 5, Breckenridge/Wahpeton 4 OT

WAHPETON, N.D. - Jace Griffin scored the game's final two goals to lead River Lakes to a 5-4 overtime win over Breckenridge/Wahpeton at Stern Sports Arena.

Griffin forced overtime when he scored with 1:44 remaining in the third period. His game-winning goal came 1:59 into the extra period. The Stars are now 8-2-2 and have won four straight.

Easton Neppl scored twice for Breckenridge/Wahpeton (4-8-1).

Little Falls 4, Southwest Christian/Richfield 2

LITTLE FALLS - Little Falls' Lucas Jendro scored two goals, including the game-winner, as the Flyers recorded a 4-2 win over Southwest Christian/Richfield at Exchange Arena.

No. 16-1A Little Falls (5-3-1) opened the game with goals by Liam Thoma and Jendro.

Southwest Christian/Richfield (4-4-0) answered in the second with goals from Paul Horner and Tate Hardacre. Bennett Breuer assisted on both tallies.

Jendro broke the tie with 9:22 to play and Joey Welinski added an empty net goal with 1:44 remaining. Izaak Kallis made 20 saves for Little Falls.
