Dec. 28: Mason Kraft's hat trick helps Spuds knock off St. Thomas Academy; Blake wins tourney title with third straight shutout

Moorhead 4, St. Thomas Academy 1

PRIOR LAKE - Mason Kraft scored three goals, Charlie Stenehjem stopped 32 shots as Moorhead made its bid as the state's top big-school team with a 4-1 victory over St. Thomas Academy on Saturday in the third round of the Tradition Holiday Invitational at the Dakotah! Ice Center.

Kraft scored in the second period and added two more goals in the third, including an empty net goal with 1:11 remaining to clinch the victory. The senior Minnesota State recruit shares the Spuds' team lead in goals with 15.

St. Thomas Academy's Jackson Rudh opened the scoring midway through the second period. Kraft answered just 51 seconds later to tie the score at 1-1.

The loss was the first of the season for No. 1-2A St. Thomas Academy (10-1-0).

No. 5-2A Moorhead (11-1-0) has won 11 straight since a season-opening loss to Wayzata. The Spuds defeated No. 1-2A Edina 6-3 and No. 10-2A Eden Prairie 5-1 in the opening two rounds of the tournament.

Northfield 3, Detroit Lakes 2

NORTHFIELD - Will Cashin scored with 59 seconds left in overtime to lift Northfield past Detroit Lakes 3-2 at the Northfield Ice Arena.

Cashin corralled a loose puck in front of the Detroit Lakes net and swatted it home for his team-leading 13th goal of the season.

Northfield's Miles Kennelly forced the overtime period with his goal with 1:18 remaining. 

Lawsen Justesen and William Cymbaluk scored for No. 13-1A Detroit Lakes (6-3-1), which led 2-1 after two periods. 

No. 9-1A Northfield improved to 8-2-1.

Hibbing/Chisholm 7, Delano 2

DATELINE - Jace Kampsula scored twice and had an assist and Tate Swanson had a goal and two assists to lead Hibbing/Chisholm past Delano 7-2 in a matchup of top 10 Class 1A teams at the Hibbing Memorial Building.

Delano's Lance Halonen and Hibbing/Chisholm's Landon Krampotich traded first-period goals, and it was all Bluejackets after that. No. 3-1A Hibbing/Chisholm (9-4-0) scored six of the next seven goals, including four straight to open the second period.

Markus Kangas also scored for No. 6-1A Delano (5-6-0).

Eden Prairie 3, Hill-Murray 3 OT

PRIOR LAKE - Cole Pitzl scored all three goals for Eden Prairie as the Eagles rallied to forge a 3-3 overtime time with Hill-Murray in the third round of the Tradition Holiday Invitational at Dakotah! Ice Center.

The goals were the first of the season for Pitzl, a junior forward. He scored the only goals of the third period as No. 10-2A Eden Prairie (6-5-1) rallied from a 3-1 deficit.

Boden Sampair, Chaz Lentz and Landon Cottingham scored for No. 4-2A Hill-Murray (9-0-1), the lone unbeaten team in Class 2A.

White Bear Lake 5, Hermantown 2

VADNAIS HEIGHTS - Jack Stanius scored twice and added an assist and Leo Gabriel stopped 23 shots to lead White Bear Lake past Hermantown, the top-ranked team in Class 1A, 5-2 at the TCO Sports Garden.

The No. 15-2A Bears (7-2-1) scored both second-period goals and added two more in the third as they pulled away from the Hawks (6-3-2).

Nash Road and Noah Norman also scored for White Bear Lake. River Freeman and Henry Peterson scored for Hermantown.

Warroad 3, Notre Dame (Conn.) 2 OT

WARROAD - Taven James scored 3:39 into overtime to lift Warroad past Notre Dame, Conn., in the third round of the Hockeytown Holiday Classic at The Gardens Arena.

James scored on a rebound of his initial close-range shot, giving the No. 4-1A Warriors (7-3-1) a third victory in as many nights. Warroad beat the top two teams in North Dakota (Grand Forks Red River 4-2 and Grand Forks Central 4-1) to open the tournament.

Broden Hontvet and Ryan Lee scored in the first period for Warroad. Patrick Kennedy made 23 saves for the Warriors.

Notre Dame, one of the top high school programs in Connecticut, dropped to 2-4-0 with the loss.

Mound Westonka 7, Regis/Altoona/McDonell (Wis.) 6 OT

RED WING - Collin Hagen scored 42 seconds into overtime, his fourth goal of the game, to lift Mound Westonka past previously unbeaten Regis/Altoona/McDonell, Wis., 7-6 in the championship game of the River Bend Holliday Classic at Prairie Island Arena.

Dallen Robinson scored with 1:39 left to put Regis/Altoona/McDonell (9-1-0) ahead 6-5. Hagen, who had scored earlier in the third period, answered 33 seconds later to tie it at 6-6.

A junior forward, Hagen ranks third in the state with 20 goals, two behind leader Mason Jenson of Rogers.

Blake Decker scored twice for Mound Westonka (6-6-0).

Blake 2, Duluth Marshall 0

ST. PAUL - Fuzz Aafedt made 36 saves to lead Blake past Duluth Marshall 2-0 in the championship game of the Super Rink Winter Classic at the TRIA Rink.

The shutout was the second of the season for Aafedt, a senior who ranks sixth in the state with a .931 save percentage.

Max Vinar scored in the first period and Grant Matushak in the third for the Bears (5-4-0).

Landon Wheeler stopped 20 shots for Duluth Marshall (7-2-2).

Blake won all three of its tournament games by shutout, beating Pine City 4-0 and Minnesota River 6-0 in the first two rounds.
