Hockey Night: St. Thomas Academy a perfect 10-0

Dec. 27: Cadets down Edina to stay unbeaten; St. Cloud hands Cloquet first loss; Bemidji overwhelms Cathedral

St. Thomas Academy 2, Edina 1

PRIOR LAKE - Nico Russ and William Dosan scored power-play goals in the third period as St. Thomas Academy won its 10th game in as many outings this season by outlasting Edina 2-1 in the second round of the Tradition Holiday Invitational at the Dakotah! Ice Center.

The loss was the second in as many nights for No. 1-2A Edina (7-3-0), the defending state Class 2A champion. Brady Peterson scored with 7:01 remaining to pull the Hornets to within a goal.

No. 3-2A St. Thomas Academy (10-0-0) is joined by No. 4-2A Hill-Murray (9-0-0) as the only undefeated big-school teams in the state.

St. Cloud 2, Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 1

ST. CLOUD - Corbin Matanich scored with 18 seconds remaining to lift St. Cloud to a 2-1 upset victory over previously unbeaten Cloquet/Esko/Carlton in the second round of the Granite City Showcase at the Municipal Athletic Complex.

Jackson Sheet also scored in the third for St. Cloud (4-5-1).

Grady Knutson scored a second-period power-play goal for the No. 2-1A Lumberjacks (9-1-0).

Bemidji 6, St. Cloud Cathedral 2

ST. CLOUD - Bemidji continued its strong start to the season, steamrolling St. Cloud Cathedral 6-2 at the Municipal Athletic Complex in the second round of the Granite City Showcase.

Nick Johnson scored twice for the Lumberjacks (9-2-0), the second going into an empty net.

The loss was the fourth of the season for No. 5-1A St. Cloud Cathedral (5-4-2), the defending state Class 1A champion.

St. Paul Johnson 5, Spooner (Wis.) 3

ST. PAUL - Rafa Batista-Rickmyer scored four-straight goals spanning the second and third periods to lead St. Paul Johnson past Spooner (Wis.) 5-3 at Gustafson-Phalen Ice Arena.

Batista-Rickmyer has 13 goals this season to lead St. Paul Johnson (3-4-1). No other Governors player has more than five.

St. Paul Johnson trailed 2-1 in the second period when Batista-Rickmyer began his scoring outburst.

Dodge County 6, Rochester Mayo 5 OT

ROCHESTER - Rochester Mayo's spirited comeback bid fell short as Dodge County beat the Spartans 6-5 in overtime in the second round of the Rochester Kiwanis Hockey Festival at Graham Arena.

Dodge County (4-4-0) led 5-3 in the waning minutes when Rochester Mayo's Jess Hendrickson scored with 1:51 remaining to pull the Spartans (3-8-0) within one. Tommy Verdick tied it at  5-5 with 38 seconds remaining. 

Dodge County's Gabe Coshenet ended the drama with 1:56 left in overtime, scoring a power-play goal.

Orono 3, Detroit Lakes 0

LONG LAKE - Orono's Jackson Knight, who ranks among the state leaders in goals and points, has a goal and an assist to lead the Spartans past Detroit Lakes 3-0 at the Orono Ice Arena.

Knight scored the only goal of the first period and assisted on Ethan Pagel's power-play goal in the second. Trey Landa completed the scoring for No. 11-1A Orono (6-4-2), which got a 26-save performance from Evan Schmidt. 

Griffin Lindberg made 25 saves for No. 13-1A Detroit Lakes (6-2-1).

Knight, a junior forward, is tied for fourth in the state with 16 goals and tied for third with 33 points.
