ST. CLOUD - Mike Randolph became the state's all-time wins leader among boys' hockey coaches with 708 on Monday as Northern Lakes beat Prairie Centre 11-0 at the St. Cloud Municipal Athletic Complex.
After the game, carpet was rolled onto the ice and a microphone was given to Randolph, who spent the bulk of his career at Duluth East and was coaching his first game as the head coach at Northern Lakes.
"When you accomplish something like this, there are a lot of people who help you along the way ... a lot of people," the 73-year-old Randolph said. "I will never forget this night."
Before posing for a photograph with his team, Randolph tugged on a jersey that paid tribute to Duluth East, St. Thomas Academy and Northern Lakes with text and logos on the front. No. 708 was on the back.
Randolph led Duluth East to led to the state tournament 18 times, starting in 1991 and ending in 2019, in his more than three decades leading the Greyhounds. He guided Duluth East to state championships in 1995 and 1998.
Randolph spent the last three seasons at St. Thomas Academy, the first as an associate head coach under Trent Eigner and the last two as head coach. He has a 708-234-37 record in 36 seasons.
Randolph passed Lorne Grosso, the longtime Rochester Mayo coach who retired with 707 wins. Albert Lea's Roy Nystrom is third all-time in the state with 705 wins and Edina legend Willard Ikola finished his career with 616. The winningest active coach in the state is Hill-Murray's Bill Lechner, with 607.
Jacob Peterson and Drew Paulbeck made strong first-game impressions on their new coach. Peterson, a junior forward, scored four goals and added two assists. Paulbeck, a senior forward, had three goals and four assists.
WILLMAR - In the only other game played Monday night, Owen Oxton and Devin Jacobs each scored twice and Shaun Paulson had five points as Sartell-St. Stephen cruised past Willmar 10-1 at the Willmar Civic Center in the season opener for both teams.
Sartell-St. Stephen scored seven unanswered goals in the second period.
