PLYMOUTH - Brandon Mickelson scored twice and Charlie Stenehjem stopped 28 shots as Moorhead beat Edina 4-1 on Saturday in the second round of the Wayzata Turkey Trot at Plymouth Ice Center, a result that is sure to shake up the top of the state Class 2A rankings.
Mickelson, a junior defenseman, scored the lone goal of the first period and capped the scoring for the No. 5-2A Spuds (1-1-0) in the third period.
Tucker Johnson scored for No. 1-2A Edina (1-1-0) the defending state Class 2A champion, late in the third.
ST. CLOUD - Griffin Sturm's power-play goal with 24 seconds remaining allowed St. Cloud Cathedral, the defending state Class 1A champion, to forge a 2-2 tie with Warroad at the Municipal Athletic Complex.
Taven James scored twice for No. 8-1A Warroad (1-0-1) and Patrick Kennedy made 22 saves for the Warriors.
John Hirschfeld, a leading Mr. Hockey candidate, also scored for No. 2-1A St. Cloud Cathedral (0-0-1).
DELANO - Senior defenseman Markus Kangas scored with 52 seconds left in overtime as Delano rallied to upend East Grand Forks 6-5 at Delano Area Ice Arena.
The loss was the second in as many games for East Grand Forks, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A in the preseason.
Kangas' goal was his second of the season, matching his 27-game total from last season.
Senior Bryce Peterson scored back-to-back goals in the third period as No. 6-1A Delano (1-1-0) rallied from a 5-3 deficit to force the overtime period.
STILLWATER - Junior forward Benny Galli scored in overtime to lift Hibbing/Chisholm past Mahtomedi 3-2 in a matchup of top-10 Class 1A teams making their season debuts at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center.
Ethan Sundvall's goal with 16 seconds left in the opening period put No. 5-1A Hibbing/Chisholm ahead 2-1. No. 4-1A Mahtomedi's Will Seevers tied it at 2-2 with 6:14 left in regulation.
Rex Walli made 33 saves for Hibbing/Chisholm. Wes Strub had 28 for Mahtomedi.
MINNETONKA - Luca Jarvis, a 6-foot-1 sophomore, scored with 46 seconds left to lift Stillwater past Minnetonka 6-5 in a wide-open contest at the Pagel Activity Center.
Both teams unveiled balanced attacks, as neither had a player score more than one goal or notch more than two points.
No. 11-2A Minnetonka (0-1-0) had a run of three unanswered goals through parts of the first and second periods; No. 10 -2A Stillwater (1-0-0) countered with a three-goal run starting late in the second and extending into the early third.
BEMIDJI - Henry Lechner registered his second game of three or more goals in as many outings as Holy Angels outlasted Bemidji 6-5 in overtime at Bemidji Community Arena.
Lechner, a senior forward and top candidate for the Mr. Hockey award, scored midway through the overtime period to clinch the win for the No. 13-2A Stars (2-0-0).
Bemidji (1-1-0) scored four third-period goals as it rallied from a 4-1 deficit. Noah Mannausau's goal (his second of the period) with 2:31 remaining forced overtime.
Lechner opened the season on Friday with a hat trick in a 7-3 win at Roseau. His seven goals lead the state.
