PLYMOUTH - Senior defenseman George Ericson's goal late in overtime lifted Wayzata to a 3-2 victory over Moorhead on Friday in the opening round of the Wayzata Turkey Trot at the Plymouth Ice Center.
Ericson fired a shot from the top of the left face-off circle through traffic into the upper left corner of the goal, beating Spuds goaltender Charlie Stenehjem.
No. 5-2A Moorhead rallied from a 2-0 deficit after the opening period on a second-period goal from Brooks Cullen and another in the third from Brandon Mickelson. Mickelson's goal came with 1:22 left in regulation.
Tate Roeder and Max Luedtke scored first-period goals for No. 8-2A Wayzata.
The goal by Ericson, who showed a sniper's touch on his winning blast, matched his total from last season.
PLYMOUTH - Mason West scored twice, Casey Vandertop had a goal and two assists and junior goaltender Chase Bjorgaard, making his first varsity start, stopped all 15 shots as defending state Class 2A champion Edina beat Maple Grove 5-0 in the opening round of the Wayzata Turkey Trot at Plymouth Ice Center.
West, a standout quarterback for the Edina football team, scored goals 32 seconds apart in the second period to put the Hornets ahead 2-0. Edina scored all five of its goals in the second, with Tucker Johnson also getting two.
GRAND RAPIDS - Jameson Duell scored 44 seconds into overtime to lift No. 18-2A Grand Rapids past Forest Lake 2-1 at Yanmar Arena.
Duell, a junior, skated the puck out of the corner, faked out a Forest Lake defenseman then did the same to Rangers goaltender Zach Schnabel before dumping the puck into an open net.
The goal was the second of the game for Duell, who scored seven last season. He outdueled Forest Lake eighth grader Maverick McKinnon, who scored a power-play goal in the first period.
DELANO - Sophomore Gavin Anderson scored twice in the third period to complete a hat trick and help Warroad pull away to a 5-3 victory over Delano in a matchup of Class 1A heavyweights at the Delano Area Ice Arena.
No. 8-1A Warroad twice held two-goal leads in the opening two periods, but No. 6-1A Delano pulled into a 3-3 tie on Mason Hargarten's goal 8:39 into the final period.
Anderson's goals came with 5:55 and 1:23 remaining. He was a standout on Warroad's Bantam A state championship team last season.
ROSEAU - Henry Lechner scored three goals and added two assists as Holy Angels opened its season in impressive fashion, beating Roseau 7-3 at Roseau Memorial Arena.
Lechner, a senior forward committed to the University of St. Thomas, scored twice in the first period and again in the third. The No. 13-2A Stars scored four unanswered goals starting late in the first period and stretching into the early third.
Cade Ginther scored twice for Roseau.
