Unseeded Cretin-Derham Hall scored four goals in a span of 6:21 in the second period as it roared past No. 5 seed Grand Rapids 6-3 in the state Class 2A third-place game at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Sophomore forward Max Anderson scored two of the goals that turned a 2-1 Cretin-Derham Hall deficit into a 5-2 lead.
Nate Chorlton, Anderson, Chuck Owens and Anderson again scored the goals during the flurry, with the first coming 9:13 into the period and the last with 1:26 remaining.
Owens added a third-period goal to put the Raiders (19-11-1) ahead 6-2.
Cretin-Derham Hall’s Jimmy Dodig and Grand Rapids’ Jacob Garski exchanged first-period goals. Grand Rapids’ Will Shermoen completed the scoring with 2:51 left in the third period.
Leo Miller made 28 saves for Cretin-Derham Hall. Ryder Miskovich and Ryan Kerr combined to stop 17 of 23 shots for No. 16-2A Grand Rapids (18-13-0).
Cretin-Derham Hall, making its third-straight state tournament appearance, finished fourth at last year’s state tournament. Grand Rapids was making its first tourney appearance since winning the Class 2A title in 2017.
Max Anderson’s goal with 1:26 left in the second period put Cretin-Derham Hall ahead 5-2 and completed a four-goal Raiders’ avalanche of goals in the second.
2 - Before Saturday's two-goal performance, Chuck Owens had only scored two goals one other time this season. The Raiders' leading scorer with 37 points netted two goals against St. Thomas Academy on March 1.
