Warroad scored three first-period goals, two on the power play, as it cruised to a 4-1 victory over Mahtomedi on Saturday in the third-place game of the state Class 1A tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Murray Marvin-Cordes, Taven James and Carson Pilgrim scored in the opening period for the No. 2-seeded Warriors (25-6-0). Marvin-Cordes and Pilgrim each scored with the man advantage. Pilgrim finished the season with 32 goals; Marvin-Cordes had 28.
Ryan Shaugabay added a second-period goal to put Warroad, ranked No. 4 in Class 1A, ahead 4-0.
Jake Hodd-Chlebeck scored a power-play goal in the third period for No. 4 seed Mahtomedi (18-13-0).
No. 5-1A Mahtomedi won last year’s state title in double overtime against Warroad. The teams met once in the regular season, with Warroad winning 7-6 in overtime on Dec. 2 at the St. Croix Recreation Center in Stillwater.

3 - Warroad recorded three face-off wins during its second power-play, which culminated in Carson Pilgrim's goal. Warroad had only won one face-off before that stretch. Taven James, who won the first Warroad face-off, won two during the power play and Murray Marvin-Cordes the other. Mahtomedi, who won the first six face-offs and 11 of the first 12, went 15-4 on face-offs in the first period.
2 by 20 - Ryan Shaugabay's second-period goal gives him two in the state tournament and seven overall. He wears No. 20 for Warroad.
7 - With three points each against Mahtomedi, senior line mates Carson Pilgrim and Murray Marvin-Cordes each extended their scoring streaks to seven games. Both were held scoreless against Bemidji on Feb. 13.
