Power-play goals from Joey Gillespie and Andrew Dwinnell helped fuel No. 3 seed St. Cloud Cathedral to a 5-1 victory over unseeded Northfield on Wednesday in a state Class 1A quarterfinal at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Cathedral converted on both of its power-play attempts.
No. 2-1A St. Cloud Cathedral’s top line of Gillespie, Dwinnell and John Hirschfeld accounted for four of the team’s five goals and combined for seven points.
Gillespie scored his power-play goal late in the second period to put the Crusaders (24-4-1) ahead 3-1 and Dwinnell scored with the man advantage early in the third to make it 4-1.
Gillespie closed out the scoring with 5:29 remaining. He finished with two goals, Hirschfeld had a goal and three assists and Dwinnell had one goal. Dwinnell is a senior and Hirschfeld and Gillespie are juniors.
Cayden Monson scored a first-period goal for No. 8-1A Northfield (22-5-2).
Can a game's biggest moment come the first 18 seconds? Possibly. Northfield goalie Max Frank’s attempted clearing pass was intercepted by John Hirschfeld who promptly scored, a bad omen for the Raiders who found themselves down 1-0 before the first batch of mini donuts came out of the fryer.
Lucky 13 - The Crusaders have now won 13-straight games this season. Fueling that run has been John Hirschfeld, whose four-point performance gives him 43 of his 79 points since Jan. 15.
7 - In his last nine games, St. Cloud Cathedral goalie Nick Hansen has allowed seven goals. He's stopped 159 of 166 shots during that run. In his last 12 games, Hansen has allowed two goals three times, the rest being shutouts or one-game efforts.
19 - In addition to his goal and three assists, Hirschfeld won 19 of 25 face-offs. Overall, the Crusaders won 36 of 59 face-offs.
If it delivers in big games, then that’s what matters.
