No. 2 seed Warroad beat unseeded New Ulm 8-1 on Wednesday in a state Class 1A quarterfinal at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Warroad erupted for five goals in the second period, the highlight coming on sophomore Dominic Anthony’s “Michigan” goal in which he skated behind net and, with the puck perched on the blade of his stick, lifted it into the upper left corner. Anthony’s goal put the Warriors ahead 4-0.
Senior Murray Marvin-Cordes scored his second of the game 5:27 into the second period to put the Warriors ahead 3-0. His low shot also eluded New Ulm's Bryer Hoffmann’s catching glove. He completed his hat trick in the third period, giving him 26 goals this season, second most among the Warriors.
Senior Carson Pilgrim scored twice in the second period, his team-best 30th and 31st goals of the season. Senior defenseman Ryan Lund also added a goal.
Anthony scored his second goal of the game in the third.
Junior defenseman Talan Helget scored the lone goal for New Ulm in the third period.
Marvin-Cordes scored the opening period’s lone goal with 5:40 left. He forced a turnover midway along the right boards then fired a pass to linemate Pilgrim. The rebound of Pilgrim’s shot popped into the slot and Marvin-Cordes was there to backhand it into the net off the left goalpost.
No. 4-1A Warroad (23-5-0) outshot No. 20-2A New Ulm (23-5-0) 12-3 in the opening period, 14-1 in the second and 37-6 overall.
Senior Carson Pilgrim kickstarted the Warriors’ five-goal second period when he raced into the New Ulm zone off the opening puck drop and unloaded a laser shot that beat the outstretched glove hand of New Ulm goaltender Bryer Hoffmann. The goal came 15 seconds into the second period.
5 - Goals scored by the Warroad in the second period. The Warriors are pursuing their fifth state title this weekend and Carson Pilgrim is wearing No. 5 this season after the passing of his stepfather Michael Tveit.
10 - Murray Marvin-Cordes has scored 10 goals in his last five games. Wednesday's hat trick was his second of the season.
25 - This trip is Warroad's 25th appearance in the state tournament. The Warriors are now 5-2 in their last seven state tournament games and have had a player record a hat trick in three of the last four.
No goalie coach ever really tells a goalie, like, 'This is how you are supposed to stop it' (lacrosse-style shot with puck being carried on the blade of the stick). So just kind of throw my hands up and hope to stop it.
