EDINA - Kam Hendrickson made 44 saves and Andy Earl scored twice in the first period as No. 2 seed Chanhassen beat No. 1 seed and previously unbeaten Minnetonka 2-1 on Thursday in the Section 2AA championship game at Braemar Arena.
John Stout scored for No. 1-2A Minnetonka (25-1-2) with 1:54 remaining, giving the defending state Class 2A champion Skippers hope for a miracle comeback that never materialized.
Hendrickson, one of three finalists for the Frank Brimsek Award that goes to the state's top senior goaltender, made 20 of his saves in the second period.
The state tournament appearance will be the first for No. 5-2A Chanhassen (23-5-0), which hadn't won a playoff game in its first 12 years as a varsity program before last season.
DULUTH - Seth Carlson scored 2:53 into the second overtime to lift No. 1 seed Grand Rapids to a 3-2 victory over No. 2 seed Andover at Amsoil Arena.
Carlson's shot from the right face-off hit Andover goaltender Cal Conway and deflected high in the air before landing behind Conway and over the goal line.
The goal was Carlson's second of the game. He scored 40 seconds into the third period to tie the score at 2-2.
Goals from Keaton Cole and Brooks Cogswell gave No. 8-2A Andover (18-9-1) a 2-0 lead.
Gus Drennen also scored for No. 16-2A Grand Rapids (17-11-0).
Andover had won the previous four section championships.
ROCHESTER - Ole Febold scored what proved to be the game winner early in the second period and Kyle Lappi made 32 saves as No. 2 seed Rochester Century/John Marshall - in its first season as a co-operative program - earned a 4-1 triumph over No. 1 seed Lakeville South at the Rochester Rec Center.
Rochester Century/John Marshall (22-4-2) qualified for the state tournament for the first time since 2009. Lakeville schools (North or South) reached the state tourney 13 of the last 14 seasons.
Century/John Marshall's Calvin O'Reilly scored the lone goal of the first period. Brekken DeWeese and Bo Bondy also scored in the second period for the Panthers.
The loss snapped Lakeville South's (16-11-0) run of five-straight state tourney appearances.
ELK RIVER - Heath Nelson scored twice and Harper Searles scored a goal and added an assist as No. 2 seed Centennial beat No. 1 seed Maple Grove 5-2 at the Furniture and Things Community Event Center.
The goals were the team-leading 32nd and 33rd of the season for Nelson, a senior forward. No. 15-2A Centennial (19-7-2) last reached the state tournament in 2018.
Lucas Busch and David Kukkonen scored for No. 7-2A Maple Grove (21-7-0), which had won the previous four section titles.
