Hockey Night: All-private Section 3AA final is set as St. Thomas Academy, Cretin-Derham Hall earn upset wins

Feb. 26: Mahtomedi and Southwest Christian/Richfield win by shutout in Section 4A semifinals

Cretin-Derham Hall 3, Eastview 2

EDINA - Freshman forward Marcus Matyas scored with 2:10 left in overtime as No. 5 seed Cretin-Derham Hall upended No. 1 seed Eastview 3-2 in a Section 3AA semifinal on Monday at Braemar Arena.

Matyas unloaded a shot from the right circle that sailed over the catching glove of Eastview goaltender Gabe Otis.

No. 11-2A Eastview (18-8-1) led 1-0 and 2-1, but Max Anderson's power-play goal 6:04 into the third period tied the score at 2-2.

Max Bennett also scored for Cretin-Derham Hall (16-10-1), the two-time defending section champion. 

Cretin-Derham Hall outshot the Lightning 37-28. The teams tied 4-4 in the regular season.

St. Thomas Academy 3, Rosemount 2

EDINA - Will Dosan scored the game winner and Cody Niesen made 29 saves as No. 3 seed St. Thomas Academy beat No. 2 seed Rosemount 3-2 in a Section 3AA semifinal at Braemar Arena, setting up an all-private school section title game for the second straight year.

Tommy Kertz, Luca Pedri and Dosan all scored in a span of 3:33 in the the first period as No. 13-2A St. Thomas Academy (17-8-2) surged to a 3-1 lead.

No. 12-2A Rosemount (19-8-0) opened the scoring on a goal by Christian Nichols early in the first period. Jake Toll's goal with 6:32 remaining pulled the Irish to within 3-2.

The Cadets will face Cretin-Derham Hall in the section title game in a rematch from last season. Cretin-Derham Hall won that game 4-2.

Southwest Christian/Richfield 3, South St. Paul 0

MAPLEWOOD - Jared Greiner had a goal and two assists and Jannes Kamp made 25 saves for the shutout as No. 2 seed Southwest Christian/Richfield beat No. 6 seed South St. Paul 3-0 in a Section 4A semifinal at Aldrich Arena.

The victory launches the Stars (17-10-0) into a section championship game for the first time.

Greiner, a senior forward, scored his 16th goal of the season in the first period. The score remained 1-0 until the third, when Owen Zick and Paul Hornor added goals for Southwest Christian/Richfield.

Wyatt Cheney made 28 saves for South St. Paul (9-17-1).

Mahtomedi 6, St. Paul Academy 0

MAPLEWOOD - Cole Swanson and Gene Wegleitner each scored twice as defending Class 1A champion Mahtomedi, the No. 1 seed, cruised past No. 5 seed St. Paul Academy 6-0 in a Section 4A semifinal at Aldrich Arena.

Charlie Brandt made 12 saves to record the shutout for the No. 5-1A Zephyrs (16-11-0), who reached the section title game for the seventh-straight season.

Isak Bildsten was superb in making 53 saves for the Spartans (10-17-0).
