Hockey Night: Rock Ridge wins in 4 OTs; No. 7 seed St. Cloud stuns No. 2 Roseau

Feb. 20: Wolverines' Grady Dimberio ends marathon game against Forest Lake; Buffalo knocks off Sartell-St. Stephen

Section 7AA Quarterfinals

Rock Ridge 4, Forest Lake 3 (4 OT)

VIRGINIA - Grady Dimberio scored 20 seconds into the fourth overtime as No. 4 seed Rock Ridge outlasted No. 5 seed Forest Lake 4-3 on Tuesday at the Iron Trail Motors Event Center in Virginia.

Dimberio, stationed in the slot, one-timed a centering feed between the legs of Forest Lake goaltender Andrew Saxe, who made numerous spectacular saves in the overtime sessions. 

In other lengthy section playoff matchups, Champlin Park and Coon Rapids played a seven-overtime game in 2000 and Eden Prairie and Edina played to six overtimes in 1998.

Section 8AA Quarterfinals

St. Cloud 2, Roseau 1

ROSEAU - Ben Glaesman made 42 saves and Henry Burkstrand scored the winning goal as No. 7 seed St. Cloud stunned No. 2 seed Roseau 2-1 on Tuesday at Roseau Memorial Arena in a Section 8AA quarterfinal.

Glaesman, a senior, stopped 16 shots in the first period, which ended in a 1-1 tie. No. 17-2A Roseau's Jake Kvien and St. Cloud's Reece Gronseth were the goal scorers. Both scored on power plays.

Burkstrand, a senior forward, scored the winner 7:05 into the third period. The goal was his eighth of the season.

St. Cloud improved to 11-14-1. Roseau, which beat St. Cloud 6-2 on Jan. 6, finishes the season at 18-7-1.

Section 8AA Quarterfinals

Buffalo 2, Sartell-St. Stephen 0

SARTELL - Max Varner made 21 saves and Evan Hinnenkamp scored both goals as No. 6 seed Buffalo upended No. 3 seed Sartell-St. Stephen 2-0 at Bernick's Ice Arena in another surprising Section 8AA quarterfinal outcome.

Hinnenkamp scored midway through the first period and added an empty net goal with 1:05 remaining. The goals were the seventh and eighth of the season for the sophomore forward.

Varner, a senior, notched his second shutout of the season as Buffalo improved to 9-16-1. Sartell-St. Stephen, which beat Buffalo 2-0 on Feb. 13, finishes at 18-7-1.

Section 7AA Quarterfinals

Duluth East 5, Duluth Denfeld 1

DULUTH - Thomas Gunderson and Wyatt Peterson alternated scoring the game's first four goals as No. 3 seed Duluth East defeated No. 6 seed Duluth Denfeld 5-1 at the Heritage Sports Center.

After Gunderson gave the Greyhounds (10-15-1) the lead 3:22 into the contest, Peterson scored with 7:03 left in the first period for a 2-0 lead.

Gunderson scored 3:36 into the second and Peterson followed with his second goal 25 seconds later. Luke Anderson recorded a power-play goal with 2:31 left in the period for a 5-0 lead.

Jacob Feiro scored with 12:23 remaining for Duluth Denfeld (11-13-2).

Gunderson and Noah Teng each recorded three assists while Kole Kronstedt made 32 saves.

East defeated Denfeld 2-1 in overtime Jan. 16.

Section 5AA First Round

Blaine 3, Irondale 1

BLAINE - Gavin George and Hudson Bethel scored in the first period as No. 8 seed Blaine hung on for a 3-1 win over No. 9 seed Irondale at Fogerty Arena.

George gave Blaine (6-19-1) lead with a power-play goal with 4:54 left in the first before Bethel doubled the lead with 47 seconds remaining in the first.

Irondale (13-13-0) then cut the lead to 2-1 on Grady Springborn's goal 1:41 into the third but the Bengals' Nate Wallraff scored with 9:54 left for the final margin.

Landon Palmgren made 21 saves for Blaine while Alex Sabev stopped 31 shots for Irondale.

Section 3A First Round

Fairmont 4, Worthington 3

WORTHINGTON - Fairmont scored three unanswered goals in the third period, including the winner from Lucas Sommers with 4:25 remaining, as the No. 9-seeded Cardinals rallied to beat No. 8 seed Worthington 4-3 in a Section 3A first-round game at Worthington Ice Arena.

Worthington led 3-1 entering the third on second-period goals from Spenser Nickel, Ian Bumgardner and Easton Newman.

Sommers, a senior forward, scored early in the the third period and Gavin Kester tied it at 3-3 with 4:41 remaining.

Fairmont improves to 3-23-0. Worthington finishes with a 7-18-0 record.
