Hockey Night: Goals come fast and furious as Forest Lake outscores Coon Rapids

Feb, 13: High-scoring affairs nothing new for Rangers, Cardinals; Mahtomedi outlasts Cretin-Derham Hall

Forest Lake 9, Coon Rapids 8

COON RAPIDS - Cole Rivard scored three goals and Caden Speidel had the eventual game winner as Forest Lake outlasted Coon Rapids 9-8 in game that, seemingly, was defense optional on Tuesday at the Coon Rapids Ice Center.

Forest Lake (10-13-1) led 8-4 1:13 into the third period on a power-play goal by Thomas Heikkila.

Coon Rapids (13-8-0) scored three-straight goals, including one from Tyler Barsness as he completed his hat trick, to pull to within 8-7.

The Cardinals have scored seven-or-more goals in three of their last four games and eight times in all this season. They've allowed six-or-more goals eight times. Forest Lake has scored seven-or-more goals in three of its last five games.

Barsness' three goals gives him a team-best 26 this season. Speidel has a team-high 15 goals for Forest Lake.

Mahtomedi 2, Cretin-Derham Hall 1 (OT)

ST. PAUL - Jake Hodd-Chlebeck scored 2:16 into overtime as Mahtomedi escaped Highland Arena with a 2-1 victory over Cretin-Derham Hall despite being outshot 41-14.

West Strub, a junior making his 10th start of the season, turned in his best performance. He stopped 15 shots in each of the first and second periods.

Mahtomedi junior Max Egan's power-play goal with 3:08 remaining in regulation forced the overtime period.

Max Bennett scored a power-play goal in the first period to put Cretin-Derham Hall (13-9-1) ahead 1-0.

Mahtomedi, the defending state Class 1A champion, improved to 13-11-0.

Hermantown 4, Grand Rapids 1

GRAND RAPIDS - Dane Callaway stopped 31 shots and Ford Skytta had a goal and an assist as Hermantown raced past Grand Rapids 4-1 at Yanmar Arena.

Skytta assisted on Charlie Marchand's power-play goal 5:48 into the third period. Skytta scored a goal of his own less than 4 minutes later to give the No. 1-1A Hawks (15-8-2) a 4-1 lead.

Luka Rohloff scored the lone goal of the first period as No. 17-2A Grand Rapids (14-11-0) took the early lead.

Alexandria 5, Northern Lakes 2

BREEZY POINT - Alexandria scored the final five goals, including two each from Grady Olson and Leonard Kompelien as it rallied to beat Northern Lakes 5-2 at Breezy Point Ice Arena.

Kompelien scored both his goals on power plays in the third period as the No. 11-1A Cardinals (14-9-1) pulled away.

Drew Paulbeck scored twice in the first period as No. 19-1A Northern Lakes (14-8-0) took a early 2-0 lead.

Rosemount 6, Lakeville South 0

ROSEMOUNT - Trent Nelson made 26 saves to earn the shutout and Hans Hedlund scored three goals as Rosemount overwhelmed Lakeville South 6-0 at Rosemount Ice Arena.

The shutout was the second of the season for Nelson, a senior with a 2.10 goals against average for the No. 15-2A Irish (17-7-0).

Carson Hauger made 26 saves for Lakeville South (15-9-0)

Monticello 4, Minneapolis 3 (OT)

MONTICELLO - Carter Lemke scored early in the overtime period as Monticello hung on to beat Minneapolis 4-3 at Moose Sherritt Ice Arena.

Nicklaus Nordeen, Bodie Dahl and Ozzie Snodgrass scored in a span of 5:33 in the second period as Minneapolis (10-15-0) took a 3-1 lead. 

Roman Thompson scored late in the second period and early in the third (his 30th and 31st goals of the season) as No. 12-1A Monticello (19-4-1) tied it 3-3.

Crookston 5, Red Lake Falls 4 (OT)

RED LAKE FALLS - Garrett Fischer scored with 1:23 left in overtime to lift Crookston past Red Lake Falls 5-4 at Cardin-Hunt Arena.

The victory was the third straight and sixth in seven games for the Pirates (15-10-0), who trailed 4-1 midway through the second period.

Kegan Schmitz scored twice for Red Lake Falls (18-5-1), which lost 7-5 to Crookston on Dec. 1.
