Hockey Night: Minnetonka outlasts Edina to stay unbeaten

Feb. 10: Schultz scores winner for Skippers; Shakopee overpowers Rosemount; Hill-Murray, Andover, Moorhead notch wins

Minnetonka 3, Edina 1

MINNETONKA - In a matchup of No. 1 vs. No. 2, top-ranked Minnetonka remained the state's lone unbeaten team on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Edina at a packed Pagel Activity Center.

No. 1-2A Minnetonka (21-0-2) opened the scoring on Javon Moore's power-play goal with 1:22 left in the first.

No. 2-2A Edina (19-3-1) evened the score when Jackson Nevers scored short handed 11:27 into the second. Minnetonka regained the lead on Ashton Schultz's goal with 2:55 remaining in the period.

The Skippers' Sam Scheetz scored short handed 2:28 into the third to make it 3-1.

Hunter Bauer made 26 saves to improve to 18-0-2 on the season. He has a state-best 0.97 goals-against average and is tied for second with a .946 save percentage.

Edina and Minnetonka skated to a 1-1 tie in the teams' previous meeting, Jan. 18 at Braemar Arena. 

The Skippers have two games left on their regular season schedule, Feb . 13 at home against St. Michael-Albertville and Feb. 15 at Eden Prairie.

Shakopee 5, Rosemount 4

SHAKOPEE - Shakopee's Nate Pederson scored 2:50 into the third period for the winning goal as the Sabers beat Rosemount 5-4 in a matchup of top-10 ranked Class 2A teams at the Shakopee Ice Arena.

The teams traded four-goal outbursts before Pederson's game winner.

No. 6-2A Shakopee (19-3-1) scored its first four goals in the opening period as Cooper Simpson, Will Youngberg, Cooper Siegert and Peyton Chase netted goals.

No. 9-2A Rosemount (16-7-0) answered with four goals in the second as Hans Hedlund, Cade Sherman, Josh Toll and Christian Garrity scored to tie it at 4-4 entering the third.

Hill-Murray 2, St. Thomas Academy 1 (OT)

MENDOTA HEIGHTS - Chaz Lentz tipped a shot to score 3:08 into overtime to give Hill-Murray a 2-1 win over St. Thomas Academy in a matchup of top-20 teams at the St. Thomas Ice Arena.

No. 15-2A Hill-Murray (13-8-2) opened the scoring on Landon Cunningham's goal with 5:24 remaining in the second.

No. 7-2A St. Thomas Academy (14-8-2), which suffered its second-straight loss, evened the score on Jimmy Zavoral's goal with 8:27 left in regulation.

The Cadets outshot the Hill-Murray 43-25. Andrew Lane stopped 42 shots for the Pioneers.

Andover 3, Centennial 1

ANDOVER - Andover scored three goals in the third period as it downed Centennial 3-1 at the Andover Community Center.

No. 10-2A Centennial (14-7-2) took the lead on Harper Searles' second-period goal. Searles has scored 18 goals among his team-high 50 points.

No. 11-2A Andover (16-7-1) started its comeback when Caleb Goar scored 4:33 into the third. The Huskies' Ben Doll scored 20 seconds later for a 2-1 lead and Gavin Sullivan completed the scoring with an empty-net goal with 31 seconds to play.

Doll has a team-high 15 goals, including three in the past two games.

Benilde-St. Margaret's 5, Grand Rapids 1

ST. LOUIS PARK - Benilde-St. Margaret's won its eighth-straight game by scoring the game's final five goals in a 5-1 win over Grand Rapids at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.

No. 17-2A Grand Rapids (14-10-0) took the lead 30 seconds into the contest on Nathan Garski's goal.

No. 5-2A Benilde-St. Margaret's (19-4-1) tied the game midway in the first on Caleb Koskie's goal.

Benilde-St. Margaret's took the lead on the first of two goals by Mason Stem=nger. The lead became 3-1 on Jack Anderson's power-play goal.

Stenger and Junior Podein added third-period goals. Mason McElroy made 27 saves for the win.

Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 5, Roseau 4 (OT)

CLOQUET - Jace Stewart's overtime goal gave Cloquet/Esko/Carlston a 5-4 victory over Roseau at the Cloquet Area Recreation Center. 

Stewart, a senior forward, scored his fifth goal of the season in the OT period as the No. 13-1A Lumberjacks (12-13-0) won despite being outshot 46-22.

No. 20-2A Roseau (17-6-1) took a 3-2 lead on Noah Urness goal, his second of the game, 4:29 into the third.

Cloquet/Esko/Carlton took a 4-3 lead on goals by Niko Gentillini and Cooper Ellena midway through the final period. Gentillini's goal was his second of the game.

Roseau's Eli Wensloff forced overtime by scoring with 5:24 remaining in regulation.

Maple Grove 5, Lakeville South 3

LAKEVILLE - Charlie Steenerson gave Maple Grove a 4-2 lead midway in the third period as the Crimson beat Lakeville South 5-3 at Hasse Arena in a game between top-20 teams.

No. 8-2A Maple Grove (18-5-0) led 2-1 after the first period and took a 3-2 lead on Brady Aubut's goal with 5:23 remaining in the second.

Steenerson opened scoring in the third before No. 19-2A Lakeville South (15-8-0) made it 4-3 on Matthew Andriano-Allard's goal with 7:47 to play.

Lucas Busch completed the scoring with 8 seconds left.

La Crescent 4, Wausau West (Wis.) 1

WAUSAU - La Crescent-Hokah won its 19th-straight game as the Lancers recorded a 4-1 win over Wausau West (Wis.).

No. 19-1A La-Crescent-Hokah (23-1-0) got 35 saves from Charlie Wieser. Scoring goals for the Lancers were Colton Holzer, Michael Stojka, Tobias Sajook and Cody Hogan.

Moorhead 5, Warroad 4 (OT)

WARROAD - Moorhead's Brandon Mickelson scored on a power play 2:24 into overtime as the Spuds downed Warroad in a back-and-forth contest at The Gardens Arena.

Moorhead (11-11-1) opened the scoring when Carter Midthune scored with 1:47 remaining in the first.

No. 1-1A Warroad (18-5-0) got on the scoreboard when Carson Pilgrim scored his first goal 3:06 into the second. The Spuds answered with Zac Zimmerman's goal 26 seconds later.

Pilgrim then tied the game with a power-play goal midway in the second. Kyler Lien gave the Warriors a 3-2 lead with 3:45 remaining in the second but Moorhead evened the scored on Mason Kraft's goal with 1:17 left in the period.

The Spuds took a 4-3 lead on Tyden Bergeson's goal but Ryan Lund forced overtime by scoring with 44 seconds to play, setting the stage for Mickelson's game winner.

Warroad outshot Moorhead, 41-22.
