Hockey Night: Betzold, Bailey power Gentry Academy past Holy Family

Feb. 8: Zach Price makes 45 saves as Maple Grove shuts out STA; Elk River notches signature win

Gentry Academy 4, Holy Family 1

VICTORIA - Ryder Betzold and Eli Bailey each had a goal and an assist as Gentry Academy overpowered Holy Family 4-1 on Thursday at the Victoria Recreation Center.

Betzold's shorthanded goal from a sharp angle early in the second period held up as the winner for the Stars (18-5-0), who outshot the No. 14-2A Fire (14-6-1) in every period for a 40-19 advantage overall.

An Arizona State commit, Betzold leads Gentry Academy with 21 goals and 42 points.

Holden Pajor scored to get Holy Family to within 3-1 early in the third period. But Easton Rooney scored for Gentry Academy less than a minute later as the Stars regained their three-goal lead.

Gentry Academy has won three straight and 15 of its last 17.

Maple Grove 3, St. Thomas Academy 0

MAPLE GROVE - Senior forward Andrew Karkoc scored all three goals and Zach Price made 45 saves as Maple Grove upended St. Thomas Academy 3-0 at the Maple Grove Community Center.

Karkoc scored twice in the second and once in the third, giving him 16 goals this season, second most for the No. 8-2A Crimson (17-5-0).

Price's shutout was his fifth of the season. He ranks in the top 10 in the state in both save percentage (.932) and goals-against average (1.73).

Cody Niesen made 22 saves for No. 7-2A St. Thomas Academy (14-7-2).

Elk River 7, Centennial 5

ELK RIVER - Daniel Babcock and Jake Christian each scored twice and Braden Hansberger had three assists as Elk River outlasted Centennial 7-5 in a Northwest Suburban Conference matchup at the Furniture and Things Community Event Center.

Babcock scored the first two goals of the opening period and Preston Holmes added another goal for the Elks (13-9-1) in the opening period as they surged to a 3-0 lead. 

Heath Nelson scored twice in the final 3 minutes as No 10 Centennial (14-6-2) closed to within 6-5.

La Crescent-Hokah 6, Onalaska/La Crosse (Wis.) 2

ONALASKA, Wis. - Tobias Sajook scored twice on power plays and Wyatt Farrell had a goal and two assists as La Crescent-Hokah eased past Onalaska/La Crosse (Wis.) 6-2 at the Onalaska Omni Center.

Farrell's goal gives him a state-leading 48 this season and 192 for his career. He needs four goals to tie the career mark of 196 set by Little Falls' Ben Hanowski. 

The Lancers (22-1-0), who have already set the school mark for victories in season, have two games left on their regular-season schedule.

Duluth Marshall 2, Duluth Denfeld 2 (OT)

DULUTH - Pacey Adduono's goal in the opening minute of the third period completed the scoring and helped Duluth Marshall forge a 2-2 overtime tie with Duluth Denfeld at the Heritage Sports Center.

Goals in the opening 7 minutes of the second period from Cory Backstrom and Nolan Harju put Denfeld (10-12-2) ahead 2-0. 

Max Berrisford scored with 7:12 left in the the second to pull Duluth Marshall (14-8-2) to within 2-1.

Kaenan Smith made 42 saves for Marshall.

Owatonna 3, Northfield 2 (OT)

OWATONNA - Owen Beyer's goal with 6 seconds left in overtime lifted Owatonna to a 3-2 upset win over Northfield at Four Seasons Centre in a showdown of the Big 9 Conference's top two teams.

The conference loss was the first of the season for No. 8-2A Northfield, which has a 12-1-0 Big 9 record, good for 32 points. Owatonna is 8-2-2 in the conference and alone in second place with 26 points.

Beyer also scored in the second period and leads the Huskies with 27 goals, 14 more than the team's next highest scorer.

Christian Whiteman and Cayden Monson scored for Northfield.

Rochester Century/John Marshall 1, Rochester Mayo 1 (OT)

ROCHESTER - Ole Fevold scored for Rochester Century/John Marshall and Connor Dahl for Rochester Mayo in a map of just more than 3 minutes in the second period to account for all the goals in a defensive struggle between the intracity rivals at Graham Arena.

Dawson Desjardins had a stellar performance in goal for Mayo (2-18-1), stopping 38 shots. Kyle Lappi made 20 saves for the Century/John Marshall.

Detroit Lakes 3, Little Falls 2 (OT)

DETROIT LAKES - Junior defenseman Jace Fields scored 2:47 into overtime to lift Detroit Lakes to a 3-2 upset victory over Little Falls at the Freeman Sports Arena.

Joey Welinski scored twice in the third period as No. 15-1A Little Falls (15-8-0) rallied from a 2-0 deficit.

Fields' goal was his fourth of the season.
