Hockey Night: Warroad's James steals Hockey Day show

Jan. 27: Warriors' junior forward scores hat trick in triumph over Roseau; BSM defenseman has major impact in win over Hill-Murray; Holy Family beats North Dakota's top team

Warroad 6, Roseau 2

WARROAD - Junior forward Taven James was the Hockey Day Minnesota hero for Warroad, scoring three goals - including a shorthander into an empty net in the closing seconds - to lead the host Warriors past arch rival Roseau in the regionally televised outdoor game at Warroad High School.

James opened the scoring 63 seconds into the first period and put No. 1-1A Warroad (16-3-0) ahead 4-1 with 6:52 left in the third. He has 15 goals this season, second most on the team.

Alex Ballard scored to pull Roseau (14-5-1) to 3-1 early in the second period and Jake Halvorson's goal got the Rams to within 5-2 late in the third.

Roseau won the first meeting between the teams, beating Warroad 3-2 in overtime on Jan. 9.

Benilde-St. Margaret's 6, Hill-Murray 2

MAPLEWOOD - Sophomore defenseman Mason Minor scored twice in the third period as Benilde-St. Margaret's pulled away for a 6-2 victory over Hill-Murray in a matchup of longtime private school powers.

No. 8-2A Benilde-St. Margaret's (13-4-1) led 3-2 going into the third period when Minor scored back-to-back goals to put the Red Knights ahead 5-2.

No. 12-2A Hill-Murray (10-6-2) led 1-0 on Lucas Mann's first-period goal and pulled to within 3-2 on Caden Zasada's goal with 3:08 left in the second. The loss snapped the Pioneers' five-game winning streak.

Holy Family 6, Grand Forks Red River (N.D.) 5 (OT)

VICTORIA - Holden Pajor's power-play goal with 23 seconds left in overtime lifted Holy Family past Grand Forks Red River (N.D.) 6-5 at the Victoria Recreation Center.

No. 13-2A Holy Family (11-4-1) scored the final three goals, including two in the third period as the Fire rallied from a 5-3 deficit. Drew Roelofs and Connor Crowley scored in the third for Holy Family, with Crowley's goal coming with 54 seconds left in regulation. Crowley also scored a first-period goal.

Grant Gardner scored three goals, all in the first period, for Red River. The loss dropped the Roughriders, No. 1 in North Dakota's latest coaches' poll, to 14-4-0.

Maple Grove 3, Hermantown 2 (OT)

HERMANTOWN - Andrew Karkoc scored with 3 seconds left in regulation and Owen Smith scored in overtime as Maple Grove rallied for a 3-2 victory over Hermantown at Hermantown Arena.

No. 2-1A Hermantown (12-6-2) seemingly had the game wrapped up, leading 2-1 with the clock winding down and the puck pinned along the boards behind its net. But the puck popped free to Karkoc, who scored the dramatic goal to force OT.

Joey Leafblad scored in the second period to give No. 5-2A Maple Grove (13-5-0) a 1-0 lead heading into the third.

Luverne 5, Cambridge-Isanti 4

ISANTI - Luverne scored three unanswered goals in the third period, including the winner from Elliot Domagala with 2:12 remaining, to rally for a 5-4 win over Cambridge-Isanti at Isanti Ice Arena.

Domagala scored twice for the No. 10-1A Cardinals (16-2-0), his 14th and 15th goals of the season.

Cambridge-Isanti (8-12-0) scored three unanswered goals in the second period, including a pair by Seth Terhell, as it surged to a 4-2 lead.

Hibbing/Chisholm 5, Thief River Falls 3

THIEF RIVER FALLS - Hibbing/Chisholm scored four uananswered goals through parts of the first and second period as it beat Thief River Falls 5-3 at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Sophomore forward Kellen Elsner scored twice in the first period and put No. 17-1A Hibbing/Chisholm (15-7-0) ahead 5-2 with his hat-trick goal in the third. He ranks second on the Bluejackets with 15 goals.

Spencer Anderson scored twice for No. 14-1A Thief River Falls (12-7-1). The Prowlers had their five-game win streak snapped.

La Crescent-Hokah 13, Fairmont 0

FAIRMONT - Senior forward Wyatt Farrell scored twice in the second period as he continued his chase for the state's all-time career goal-scoring record in La Crescent-Hokah's 13-0 victory over Fairmont at Martin County Arena.

Farrell leads the state with 66 points and is tied for first in goals with 37. He has 181 goals for his career, 15 behind the record of 196 set by Little Falls' Ben Hanowski. 

No. 19-1A La Crescent-Hokah (17-1-0) has seven regular-season games remaining.

Mankato East 7, Fergus Falls 6 (OT)

MANKATO - Owen Quist's power-play goal 2:03 into overtime gave Mankato East a 7-6 triumph over Fergus Falls in a run-and-gun showdown at All Seasons Arena.

The teams combined for seven goals in the third period, including three by Fergus Falls' Kellen Stenstrom who finished with a season-high five in the contest.

Luke Lebens forced the overtime period, scoring for Mankato East (9-10-1) with 55 seconds left in the third.

Stenstrom's fifth goal put Fergus Falls (6-13-0) ahead 6-5 with 7:45 left in regulation. He leads the Otters with 18 goals among his team-best 33 points.
