Hockey Night: Edina hands Wayzata its first loss

Jan. 23: Ryan Flaherty, Joe Bertram star for Hornets; Chanhassen rolls past Gentry Academy; La Crescent's Wyatt Farrell scores five

Edina 4, Wayzata 1

PLYMOUTH - Ryan Flaherty scored twice and added an assist as Edina beat Wayzata 4-1 on Tuesday night at the Plymouth Ice Center, handing the Trojans their first loss of the season.

Flaherty, a senior forward, opened the scoring with 6:07 left in the second when he converted a backdoor feed from John Halverson. Flaherty scored again with 4 minutes left in the second.

Senior goaltender Joe Bertram also played a crucial role in the victory for the No. 4-2A Hornets (15-2-1), as he stopped 31 of 32 shots. He has a .944 save percentage, fifth best in the state.

No. 2-2A Wayzata (14-1-2) pulled to within 2-1 on a goal by Jake Mattson with 1:54 left in the second, but Edina freshman Freddie Schneider answered with his ninth goal of the season with 22 seconds left in the middle period.

Caleb Pittsley added a third-period goal for Edina.

Wayzata's loss leaves No. 1-2A Minnetonka (15-0-2) as the state's lone unbeaten team.

Chanhassen 6, Gentry Academy 1

VICTORIA - Tyler Smith and Caden Lee each scored twice and Owen Buesgens had three assists as Chanhassen rolled past Gentry Academy 6-1 at the Victoria Recreation Center in a matchup of top-20 Class 2A teams.

Gavin Uhlenkamp and Caden Lee scored in the second period as No. 3-2A Chanhassen (15-4-0) surged to a 3-1 lead. Jack Christ, Lee and Smith all scored in the third for the Storm, who have won eight straight and 13 of their last 14 games.

Senior goaltender Kam Hendrickson made 26 saves for Chanhassen. He's allowed more than one goal just once in his last 11 starts. 

Junior forward Ryder Betzold scored the lone goal for No. 18-2A Gentry Academy (15-4-0).

La Crescent-Hokah 13, Black River Falls (Wis.) 2

LA CRESCENT - Wyatt Farrell scored five goals as he moved closer to the state's career goal-scoring record while leading La Crescent-Hokah to a 13-2 win over Black River Falls (Wis.) at the La Crescent Community Arena.

Farrell, a senior forward, has 35 goals this season and 179 for his career. Ben Hanowski of Little Falls, who played for the Flyers from 2005-09 owns the all-time career record with 196 goals.

The No. 19-1A Lancers improved to 16-1-0 and have six games left on their regular season schedule.

Mound Westonka 5, Southwest Christian/Richfield 4

RICHFIELD - Junior forward Aric Haataja scored what held up as the winning goal late in the second period as Mound Westonka rallied to upset Southwest Christian/Richfield 5-3 at the Richfield Ice Arena.

Haataja's goal was just his third of the season and capped a three-goal flurry for the White Hawks (8-9-1) late in the second period as they rallied from a 4-2 deficit.

Christian Greer and Kaden Feltmann each had a goal and an assist for the No. 20-1A Stars (11-6-0).

Minneapolis 5, Owatonna 2

OWATONNA - Matthew Walsh scored twice an added an assist as Minneapolis cruised past Owatonna 5-2 at the Four Seasons Centre.

Walsh, a junior forward, scored goals in the second and third period as Minneapolis (7-10-0) built on its 2-1 lead after the first. Adam Lybeck made 21 saves for Minneapolis.

Mark Spurgeon Jr. and Owen Beyer scored for Owatonna (12-4-1).

Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 4, Rock Ridge 1

CLOQUET - Jace Stewart scored twice in the first period and Jacob Illonardo made 20 saves to lead Cloquet/Esko/Carlton past Rock Ridge 4-1 at the Cloquet Area Recreation Center.

Stewart scored with 9:37 and 28 seconds left in the first as the No. 12-1A Lumberjacks (10-9-0) rallied from an early 1-0 deficit.

Niko Gentilini added a second-period goal and Bobby Thorton scored in the third for CEC.

Cac Carlson scored the lone goal for Rock Ridge (14-4-1).

Albert Lea 1, Winona 0 (OT)

WINONA - Sophomore forward Jacob Kolker scored a shorthanded goal with 53 seconds left in overtime as Albert Lea outlasted Winona 1-0 at Bud King Ice Arena.

Both goaltenders were stellar despite seeing a steady barrage of shots. Junior Ledger Stadheim made 44 saves to earn the shutout for Albert Lea (9-8-1).

Michal Dubek made 39 saves for Winona (10-5-0).
