Hockey Night: Freshman fuels Hill-Murray OT win over Grand Rapids

Jan. 20: Riley Zupfer scores winner for Pioneers; White Bear Lake tops Hermantown; Minnetonka's Hunter Bauer notches seventh shutout

Hill-Murray 4, Grand Rapids 3 (OT)

GRAND RAPIDS - Freshman Riley Zupfer scored 1:14 into overtime as Hill-Murray topped Grand Rapids 4-3 on Saturday at Yanmar Arena.

Zupfer, on a 2-on-2 rush with Boden Sampair, fired high over the blocking glove of Grand Rapids goaltender Ryan Kerr for the winner.

No. 14-2A Hill-Murray (9-5-2) held leads of 2-0 and 3-1 but Grand Rapids (9-9-0) rallied in the third on goals from Kyler Miller and Nathan Garski to tie it at 3-3.

Zupfer's scored twice against the Thunderhawks, his second and third goals of the season. He scored seven goals last season as an eighth-grader.

Simon Seidl and Boden Sampair also scored for the Pioneers.

White Bear Lake 3, Hermantown 2

HERMANTOWN - Vinnie Villella's goal midway through the second period held up as the winner as White Bear Lake completed a sweep of northern Minnesota powerhouses by beating Hermantown 3-2 at Hermantown Ice Arena.

Villella, a senior forward, scored the winner with 6:17 left in the second period to put the No. 11-2A Bears (12-3-1) ahead 3-1. 

No. 1-1A Hermantown (11-4-2) closed to within 3-2 on River Freeman's goal with 3:22 left in the second. Hermantown outshot the Bears 32-24.

White Bear Lake beat Grand Rapids 2-0 on Friday night despite being outshot 32-17.

Minnetonka 4, Eden Prairie 0

MINNETONKA - Hunter Bauer earned his state-leading seventh shutout of the season and Ashton Schultz had a goal and an assist as Minnetonka remained one of the state's two unbeaten teams (Wayzata is the other) with a 4-0 win over Lake Conference rival Eden Prairie at Pagel Activity Center.

Bauer, a senior in his first season as the varsity starter, ranks second in the state with a 0.97 goals-against average. His .945 save percentage is tied for fourth best with Eden Prairie's Isaiah Paulnock.

Luke Garry scored in the first period and Hagen Burrows in the second for the No. 1-2A Skippers (15-0-2). Sam Scheetz and Schultz added goals late in the third.

Paulnock finished with 46 saves for the No. 18-2A Eagles (10-5-1).

Park of Cottage Grove 2, Forest Lake 1

FOREST LAKE - Wyatt Beaurline scored with 56 seconds remaining to lift Park of Cottage Grove past Forest Lake 2-1 at the Forest Lake Sports Center.

Blake Jacobson's goal put Forest Lake (5-10-1) 1-0 early in the first period. 

Park (10-6-0) tied it 3:31 into the third on Jackson Rudh's team-leading 17th goal of the season.

The victory was the third straight and sixth in seven games for the Wolfpack.

Duluth East 4, Rock Ridge 3 (OT)

DULUTH - Wyatt Peterson scored 29 seconds into overtime as Duluth East outlasted Rock Ridge 4-3 in a matchup of Section 7AA foes at Heritage Sports Center.

Rock Ridge, a newcomer to the section after opting to move up from Section 7A, had longtime section power broker Duluth East on the ropes in the third period, leading 3-2 on a goal by Caz Carlson 3:24 into the period.

Carlson also scored 31 seconds into the second period to put Rock Ridge (14-3-1) ahead 2-1.

Peterson scored 7:06 into the third period to tie the score at 3-3. 

The overtime victory was the second straight for Duluth East (6-11-1) which beat Duluth Denfeld 2-1 in OT on Jan. 16.

Stillwater 2, St. Thomas Academy 2 (OT)

MENDOTA HEIGHTS - Will Dosan's goal late in regulation helped St. Thomas Academy forge a 2-2 tie with Stillwater at St. Thomas Ice Arena.

Dosan's goal, his 11th of the season, came with 1:36 left in regulation.

Stillwater (7-6-1) took a 2-1 lead early in the second period on goal by Trey Fredenberg.

Michael Mikan put No. 5-2A St. Thomas Academy (11-5-2) ahead 1-0 early in the second period. 

Stillwater's Alex Reedy and St. Thomas Academy's Cody Niesen each made 33 saves.

La Crescent-Hokah 5, La Crosse Aquinas/Holmen 2

ONALASKA - La Crescent-Hokah scored the final three goals of the third period as it broke open a tie game and cruised past La Crosse Aquinas/Holmen at the Onalaska Omni Center for its 15th victory of the season.

Colton Holzer put the Lancers (15-1-0) ahead 3-2 early in the third period and teammates Cody Hogan and Ethan Myhre scored to finish the period.

The Lancers won despite Wyatt Farrell, second in the state with 51 points, being held off the scoresheet for one of the few times in his brilliant five-year varsity career.

Chanhassen 5, Benilde-St. Margaret's 2

ST. LOUIS PARK - Senior Gavin Uhlenkamp, a Wisconsin commit, scored twice as Chanhassen cruised past Benilde-St. Margaret's 5-2 at the St. Louis Park Rec Center in a matchup of top six-ranked Class 2A teams.

No. 3-2A Chanhassen (14-4-0) rallied from a 1-0 deficit after the first period on second-period goals by Andy Earl and Uhlenkamp, who scored in the opening minute of the third period to put the Storm ahead 3-1. Owen Buesgens also scored in the third for Chanhassen.

Cam Kirschner scored the lone goal of the first period and Junior Podein closed out the scoring in the third for No. 6-2A Benilde-St. Margaret's (11-4-1).
