Hockey Night: Maple Grove slips past Champlin Park

Jan. 18: Crimson manage 2-1 win despite being outshot 32-18; Orono outlasts SW Christian

Maple Grove 2, Champlin Park 1

MAPLE GROVE - Zach Price made 31 saves and Owen Smith's goal late in the second period held up as the winner as Maple Grove beat Champlin Park 2-1 on Thursday at the Maple Grove Community Center.

No. 4-2A Maple Grove (11-4-0) eked out the win despite being outshot 32-18.

No. 20-2A Champlin Park (8-8-1) got its lone goal from Rhys George in the opening minute of the second period to make it 1-1. 

Brady Aubut scored a first-period goal for the Crimson.

Orono 3, SW Christian/Richfield 1

RICHFIELD - Rory Kvren and Easton Sankey scored third-period goals as Orono outlasted Southwest Christian/Richfield 3-1 at Richfield Ice Arena.

Kvren, a sophomore forward, scored with 1:34 remaining to break a 1-1 tie. Easton Sankey added an empty net goal with 1:01 left.

Christian Greer scored for Southwest Christian/Richfield (10-5-0) and John Engebretson for No. 4-1A Orono (11-4-0) in the first period.

Northern Lakes 7, River Lakes 6

BREEZY POINT - Taylor Berg and Drew Paulbeck each scored twice for Northern Lakes and Jerome Martin's goal with 28 seconds left was the difference as the Lightning slipped past River Lakes 7-6 at Breezy Point Ice Arena.

Blake Schultz scored back-to-back goals in the third period as River Lakes (8-7-2) rallied to tie the score at 6-6 with 5:18 left

Paulbeck's goals give him a team-best 16 this season. Martin is one behind with 15 goals.

Detroit Lakes 1, Bemidji 1 (OT)

BEMIDJI - Detroit Lakes' Dalton Songstad and Bemidji's Biggs Knott exchanged second-period power-play goals and that was all of the scoring as the teams skated to a 1-1 tie at Bemidji Community Arena.

Kale Witt was the busier of the two goaltenders, making 38 saves for Detroit Lakes (9-7-1). Tate Metcalf made 19 saves for Bemidji (5-9-1).

Bloomington Jefferson 3, New Prague 3 (OT)

NEW PRAGUE - Will Seymour scored with 1:24 left in regulation as New Prague forged a 3-3 overtime tie with Bloomington Jefferson at the New Prague Community Center.

Bloomington Jefferson (6-7-1) took its first lead, at 3-2, midway through the third period on a goal by Dylan Larson.

Seymour added two assists to go with his clutch goal for the Trojans (10-3-1).
