Hockey Night: East beats Denfeld for Duluth bragging rights

Jan. 16: Garrett Olek's OT goal lifts Greyhounds; Grand Rapids, Chisago Lakes also win in overtime

Duluth East 2, Duluth Denfeld 1 (OT)

DULUTH - Duluth East senior forward Garrett Olek picked a prime time to notch his first goal of the season, scoring 1:34 into overtime to lift the Greyhounds past intracity rival Duluth Denfeld 2-1 on Tuesday at Heritage Sports Center.

Olek deflected Stratton Maas' shot from the right point past Denfeld goaltender Connor Doyle. Olek then threw himself in front of the Duluth East student section, almost falling to the ice in the process.

The teams were scoreless until the final 2 minutes of the third period, as Thomas Gunderson put Duluth East (5-11-1) ahead 1-0 on a goal with 1:59 remaining. 

Denfeld (9-6-1) answered with goal by Cory Backstrom with 32 seconds left in regulation. 

East outshot Denfeld, 36-23.

Grand Rapids 3, Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 2 (OT)

CLOQUET - Jameson Duell scored 58 seconds into overtime to lift Grand Rapids past Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 3-2 at the Cloquet Area Recreation Center.

Duell, a sophomore, has three goals this season, and two of them are game-winners. He scored with less than 3 minutes left to lead the Thunderhawks to a 4-3 win over Eden Prairie on Dec. 15.

Grand Rapids (9-7-0) forced the extra session on a power-play goal by Bauer Murphy with 41 seconds remaining.

Karson Young put No. 11-1A Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (9-8-0) ahead 2-1 with 3:16 left in regulation.

Holy Family 3, Holy Angels 1

VICTORIA - Drew Roelofs and Cameron Dean scored second-period goals as Holy Family rallied from an early deficit to beat Holy Angels 3-1 at the Victoria Recreation Center.

Lincoln Ayers-Assad scored midway through the first period to put Holy Angels (8-6-1) ahead 1-0 at the first intermission.

Carson Moe added an insurance goal in the third period for No. 10-2A Holy Family (8-4-1).

Hill-Murray 3, Stillwater 1

MAPLEWOOD - Hill-Murray scored three unanswered goals in the third period en route to a 3-1 win over Stillwater in a matchup of potential Section 4AA playoff foes at Aldrich Arena.

Boden Sampair, Graham Greeder and Jackson Reeves were the goal-scorers for Hill-Murray. Reeves' goal put the No. 14-2A Pioneers (8-5-2) ahead 3-0 with 1:44 to play.

Stillwater (7-6-0) ruined Andrew Lane's shutout bid with 28 seconds left on a goal by Blaine Batchelor.

Cretin-Derham Hall 4, Eastview 4 (OT)

APPLE VALLEY - Jordan Brothers scored with 31 seconds left, one of two Eastview goals in the closing minutes, as the Lightning rallied to tie Section 3AA rival Cretin-Derham Hall 4-4 at the Apple Valley Sports Arena.

No. 15-2A Cretin-Derham Hall (7-6-1) led 4-2 on John King's goal with 2:43 remaining. Chuck Owens scored earlier in the period for the Raiders to break a 2-2 tie.

Caleb Nelson scored with 1:15 left to pull No. 12-2A Eastview (9-6-1) to within 4-3.

Brothers, who scored twice, leads Eastview with 11 goals and 28 points.

Chisago Lakes 5, Cambridge-Isanti 4 (OT)

LINDSTROM - Junior forward Maxwell Bobrowski scored three goals, including the overtime winner, as Chisago Lakes outlasted Cambridge-Isanti 5-4 at the Chisago Lakes Ice Arena.

Bobrowski, who has 13 goals this season, scored twice in the second period and his goal with 3:43 left in the middle frame put the Wildcats (8-8-0) ahead 4-3.

Josh Sauro scored the lone goal of the third period as Cambridge-Isanti (7-10-0) tied it at 4-4. Sauro had two goals as did Chisago Lakes' Jack Bakken (both in the first period).

Roseau 4, East Grand Forks 4 (OT)

EAST GRAND FORKS - Jake Halvorson scored midway through the third period to complete his hat trick and pull Roseau into what finished as a 4-4 overtime tie with East Grand Forks at the East Grand Forks Civic Center.

Halvorson scored a goal in the first period and another in the second. No. 6-1A East Grand Forks (11-5-1) led by as much as 3-1 in the opening period as Hunter Varnson scored twice for the Green Wave.

Halvorson, a junior forward, has 19 goals and 19 assists this season.
