MAPLEWOOD - Will Auran's power-play goal in overtime secured a historic victory for unranked Two Rivers on Saturday, as the Warriors beat No. 11-2A Hill-Murray for what is believed to be the program's first win over the Pioneers in the long-running series between the east metro teams.
The teams had their first meeting in 1978, played again in 1983 and then competed together in the Classic Suburban conference staring in 2001-02. They joined their current conference, the Metro East, in 2014-15. Hill-Murray racked up 34 consecutive victories over Two Rivers (the high school was named Henry Sibley during much of that time) before Saturday's surprising result.
Superb goaltending was part of the formula for halting the 53-year losing streak, as Two Rivers senior Brady Altier stopped 56 shots.
Ryan Rohrer and Patrick Karlen scored 19 seconds apart early in the first period to put Two Rivers (10-4-0) ahead 2-0.
Hill-Murray (5-5-2) rallied with a goal in the second by Lucas Mann and another in the third from Joseph Luger to make it 2-2. The loss was the fourth straight for the Pioneers.
PRIOR LAKE - Charlie Rice scored with 2:21 remaining as unranked Prior Lake upended No. 8-2A Shakopee 5-4 at Dakotah! Ice Center.
Rice's goal gave Prior Lake (5-7-1) its first lead since Levi Eiter opened the scoring 3:36 into the first period.
Shakopee (10-3-1) held leads of 2-1, 3-2 and went ahead 4-3 with 10:41 remaining on Cooper Simpson's second goal of the game and 19th of the season.
Graham Erickson pulled Prior Lake into a 4-4 tie with 5:29 left.
HERMANTOWN - Will Esterbrooks scored twice and Dane Callaway made 32 saves as Hermantown survived a late flurry of Eden Prairie goals to escape with a 5-4 triumph at Hermantown Arena.
No. 17-2A Eden Prairie (7-4-1) scored three unanswered goals in the final 10:29, including two from Cole Saterdalen, as it rallied from a four-goal deficit. Saterdalen's second goal came with 35 seconds remaining.
Bode Madill's goal 3:40 into the final period put No. 1-1A Hermantown (9-2-2) ahead 5-1.
ROGERS - Despite facing 59 shots, Elk River/Zimmerman goalie Gavin Greniuk led the Elks to a 1-1 overtime tie with Rogers at the Rogers Ice Arena.
Elk River/Zimmerman (6-6-1) took a 1-0 lead with 1 minute remaining in the second period on Braden Hansberger's power-play goal.
No. 16-2A Rogers (8-4-2) evened the score on sophomore forward Cole Bumgarner's goal 4:15 into the period.
The Royals recorded 19 shots on the goal in the third and 10 more in overtime.
EDINA - Edina made the most of its 25 shots as the Hornets recorded a win over Holy Family in a meeting of ranked teams at Braemar Arena.
No. 7-2A Edina (11-2-0) built a 4-1 lead after the first period after two goals by Freddie Schneider and a goal each form Bobby Cowan and Michael Risteau.
The Hornets pushed the lead to 8-3 after Cowan scored twice in the second and Risteau and Casey Vandertop added goals. Jackson Nevers, Barrett Dexheimer and Robbie Hoch were credited with three assists.
Bryce Wiitala led No. 10-2A Holy Family (7-3-1) with two goals.
DELANO - Orono scored the first three goals and hung on for a 3-2 win over Delano in matchup of ranked Class 1A teams at the Delano Area Sports Arena.
Jackson Knight, who assisted on the Spartans' first two goals, scored midway in the second to give No. 8-1A Orono (9-4-0) a 3-0 lead.
No. 3-1A Delano (8-5-1) started its comeback when Vinny Cappelleri scored with 5:07 left in the second. The Tigers' Andrew Bruett scored with 4:17 remaining to cut the Spartans' lead to one.
ANDOVER - Andover's Keaton Coe scored midway through overtime to give the Huskies the comeback win over Osseo at the Andover Community Center.
Osseo (4-8-1) grabbed the 1-0 lead on Gavyn Krzoska's goal 3:13 into the contest.
The No. 9-2A Huskies (9-5-0) evened the scored with 3:14 remaining in regulation when Crosby Perry scored.
Cash Cruitt improved to 4-1-0 this season after stopping 17 shots for the win. Charlie Bergstrom made 42 saves for Osseo.
RED LAKE FALLS - Brock Seeger's power-play goal with 46 seconds left in the extra session gave Red Lake Falls the win over Lake of the Woods in a game that saw both team trade the lead at Cardin-Hunt Arena.
Sawyer Stromlund opened the scoring for Lake of the Woods (6-5-0) but Blake Breiland tied the game 1-1 with 1:32 left in the first.
Seeger gave the Eagles (9-3-0) their first lead with 1:39 left in the second.
After the Bears' Jordan Kervanen scored to tie the game, Seeger and Gavin Girdler scored to give Red Lake Falls a 4-2 lead. Wyatt Brown scored on the power play to bring Lake of the Woods within and then Kervanen scored with 1:54 remaining in regulation to force overtime.
Seeger now has scored 11 goals this season, one of three Eagles to score 10-or-more. Girdler has a team-high 21 goals.
