Hockey Night: St. Thomas Academy stuns BSM with two goals in final 16 seconds

Jan. 4: Cole Braunshausen scores winning goal for Cadets; Andover halts Maple Grove win streak; Minnetonka earns another running-time victory

St. Thomas Academy 3, Benilde-St. Margaret's 1

ST. LOUIS PARK - St. Thomas Academy scored twice in the final 16 seconds as it topped Benilde-St. Margaret's 3-1 on Thursday at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.

Cole Braunshausen's deflection of a point shot with 15.4 seconds left proved to be the winner, and the No. 6-2A Cadets (9-3-1) got an insurance goal into an empty net by Jimmy Zavoral with 8.9 left.

St. Thomas Aademy's Luca Pedri opened the scoring with the lone goal of the second period. A.J. Ulrich tied it for Benilde-St. Margaret's (8-2-1) 4:34 into the third period.

The late scoring halted a duel between St. Thomas Academy's Cody Niesen and Benilde-St. Margaret's Mason McElroy, both of whom played in the Upper Midwest High School Elite League this fall. Niesen had 22 saves and McElroy 18.

Andover 1, Maple Grove 0

MAPLE GROVE - Cal Conway stopped all 28 shots he faced and Caleb Goar scored the lone goal as Andover halted Maple Grove's eight-game win streak by beating the Crimson 1-0 at Maple Grove Community Center.

Goar, a senior forward, scored with 23 seconds left in the first period on an assist from Rocko Gorowsky. Goar's goal was his third of the season.

The shutout was the first of the season for Conway, a junior who has a .905 save percentage and 3.17 goals-against average for the No. 9-2A Huskies (8-5-0).

Zach Price made 26 saves for No. 3-2A Maple Grove (8-3-0), which hadn't lost since late November.

Minnetonka 6, Hill-Murray 0

MINNETONKA - Luke Garry and Sam Scheetz each had a goal and three assists and Hunter Bauer made 17 saves as Minnetonka shut out Hill-Murray 6-0 at the Pagel Activity Center.

The running-time victory (ahead by six or more goals in the final period) was the sixth this season for the No. 1-2A Skippers (11-0-1), the defending state Class 2A champion.

No. 11-2A Hill-Murray (5-4-2) has won just once in its last five outings.

Grand Rapids 5, Duluth East 3

GRAND RAPIDS - Grand Rapids scored five unanswered goals in the third period, the final three from Jacob Garski, as it rallied from a three-goal deficit to beat Duluth East 5-3 at Yanmar Arena.

Garski, a senior forward, scored with 2:58 remaining to tie it at 3-3. He put the Thunderhawks (7-5-0) ahead 4-3 with 40 seconds left and completed the hat trick with an empty net goal with 13 seconds to go.

Noah Teng scored the lone goal of the first period and Ian Christian and Thomas Gunderson scored in the second for Duluth East (3-9-1).

Eastview 4, Rosemount 3 (OT)

ROSEMOUNT - Jordan Brothers scored 2:30 into overtime to lift Eastview to a 4-3 upset of Rosemount at Rosemount Ice Arena.

Zach Wooten assisted on the goal by Brothers, who leads the No. 20-2A Lightning (7-6-0) in goals with nine and points with 23. 

Eastview goaltender Gabe Otis had 36 saves to earn the victory. 

Luca Salak scored twice for No. 13-2A Rosemount (10-4-0), which lost its third-straight game after winning 10 straight earlier in the season.

Rochester Century/John Marshall 3, Owatonna 3 (OT)

OWATONNA - Jonathan Burmester's goal with 6:01 remaining in the third period pulled Rochester Century/John Marshall into a 3-3 tie with Owatonna and completed the scoring in the Big 9 Conference clash at the Four Seasons Centre.

The teams traded the first four goals and Owatonna took its first lead, at 3-2, with 12:26 remaining on a goal by Zachary Knott.

Kyle Lappi of Rochester Century/John Marshall and Brennan Sletten of Owatonna each made 22 saves.

Century/JM (10-2-1) leads the Big 9 with 13 points, two more than Owatonna (10-1-1).
