Hockey Night: Simpson's goals power Shakopee past Eastview

Jan. 2: St. Cloud Cathedral slips past Cloquet; Hermantown outlasts Proctor, Reyelts

Shakopee 2, Eastview 1

SHAKOPEE - Cooper Simpson scored both Shakopee goals and teammate Aleksi Huson made 35 saves as the Sabers downed South Suburban Conference rival Eastview 2-1 on Tuesday at Shakopee Ice Arena.

Simpson, a junior, opened the scoring in the second period and put No. 8-2A Shakopee (10-2-1) ahead 2-0 late in the third. Simpson leads Shakopee with 17 goals and is tops among the Sabers in points with 30.

Billy Downs scored the lone goal for No. 20-2A Eastview (6-6-0).

St. Cloud Cathedral 3, Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 2

ST. CLOUD - Andrew Dwinnell's goal 3:45 into the final period held up as the winner as St. Cloud Cathedral slipped past Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 3-2 at the Municipal Athletic Complex in a matchup of top-ten ranked Class 1A teams.

No. 4-1A St. Cloud Cathedral (10-3-1) led 2-0 after the opening period on goals by Cole Hwang and Jaeger Wood.

No. 9-1A Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (7-5-0), which will be competing in the Class 1A playoffs for the first time this season, rallied to tie it on second-period goal by Ryan Jones and one in the third from Bobby Thornton.

Hermantown 2, Proctor 1 (OT)

PROCTOR - Drew Nelson scored 2:31 into overtime to lift Hermantown past Proctor 2-1 at the St. Luke's Sports and Event Center and overcome a brilliant performance by Rails goaltender A.J. Reyelts.

Reyelts, injured for much of the season, made 46 saves to keep No. 18-1A Proctor (9-5-0) on the verge of upsetting the No. 1-1A Hawks (7-2-2).

Hermantown's Andrew Johnson opened the scoring 3:31 into the third period. Proctor answered less than 3 minutes later on a power-play goal by Austin Bryant.

The game winner was the first goal of the season for Nelson, a senior defenseman.

Dodge County 2, Chisago Lakes 1

LINDSTROM - Scoring stars Gryffon Funke and Brett Ludvigsen each had a goal as Dodge County topped Chisago Lakes 2-1 at Chisago Lakes Ice Arena.

Funke's goal was his 26th of the season, the most in the state. Ludvigsen has 16 goals. His 22 assists are the second most statewide.

Joseph Alexander scored the lone goal for Chisago Lakes (6-7-0).

Chisago Lakes goaltender Brett Hanson made 34 saves. Jackson Roethler made 15 saves for Dodge County.

Providence Academy 8, Blake 7

PLYMOUTH - Louie Wehmann scored three goals for Providence Academy and Blake's Oliver Duininck matched him with three of his own, but it was the Lions' Sammy Lewis who scored the most important of the game's 15 goals, the overtime winner in Providence Academy's 8-7 triumph at Plymouth Ice Center.

Wehmann's third goal of the game and 24th of the season came with 2:30 remaining and forced the extra sesson. Neither team led by a more than a goal and the lead changed hands six times.

Providence Academy (3-10-0) led 5-3 early in the third period on Will Stricker's second goal of the game. Blake (1-11-0) pulled ahead 7-6 on Jimmy Hughes' power-play goal with 3:09 remaining.
