Hockey Night: Hibbing rallies past Breck to kick off holiday tourneys

Dec. 26: Freshman defenseman has big game for Bluejackets; Late goal lifts Hastings past South St. Paul; Urness sparks Roseau scoring outburst

Hibbing/Chisholm 3, Breck 2

BLAINE - Jackson Strukel and Kelin Elsner scored power-play goals 1:43 apart in the third period as Hibbing/Chisholm rallied for a 3-2 victory over Breck on Tuesday in a quarterfinal of the Herb Brooks Holiday Classic at the National Sports Center.

No. 16-1A Breck (5-4-1) led 2-0 in the first period on goals from Bryce Blake and Ben Amato. No. 12-1A Hibbing/Chisholm (8-4-0) started its comeback with a goal by Jace Kamsula late in the first period.

Strukel, a freshman defenseman, finished with a goal and two assists for the Bluejackets, who have won four straight and seven of their last eight games.

Hastings 2, South St. Paul 1

SOUTH ST. PAUL - Connor Zgoda's one-timer with 2:49 remaining lifted Hastings past host South St. Paul 2-1 in a quarterfinal of the South St. Paul Premier at Doug Woog Arena.

Hastings' win was a fitting finish to a day of hotly contested games in the eight-team tournament.

South St. Paul (3-6-0) tied the score at 1-1 on a power-play goal by Roddick Simons with 5:59 remaining. The goal was Simons' team-best sixth of the season.

Blake Vandehoef's second-period goal put Hastings (6-4-0) ahead 1-0.

Hastings won the tournament in 2021 and finished second last year.

Farmington 4, St. Louis Park 3

SOUTH ST. PAUL - Jacob Miller's goal with 51 seconds remaining boosted Farmington past St. Louis Park 4-3 in a quarterfinal of the South St. Paul Premier at Doug Woog Arena.

Miller's goal capped a furious third-period comeback for the Tigers (2-8-0), who trailed 3-1 entering the third then scored three unanswered goals.

Blake Farrell's second goal of the game pulled Farmington to within 3-2 and Kellen Conway tied it at 3-3, setting up Miller's game winner.

Brennan Hogan and Jack Betzer each had a goal and an assist in the first period as St. Louis Park (2-8-0) took a 2-0 lead.

Woodbury 4, Bloomington Jefferson 1

SOUTH ST. PAUL - Matthew Tarlton and Easton Talbot each had a goal and an assist as Woodbury cruised past Bloomington Jefferson 4-1 in a quarterfinal of the South St. Paul Premier at Doug Woog Arena.

After a scoreless first period, Woodbury (5-5-0), the defending tournament champion, led 3-1 entering the third on goals by Talbot, Cole Simmers and Tommy Dittrich.

Tarlton, the Royals' leading scorer with 10 points, scored a power-play goal 58 seconds into the third period to complete the scoring.

Woodbury outshot Bloomington Jefferson (4-5-0) 46-10.

Roseau 7, St. Louis Park 2

ROSEAU - Roseau scored four goals, including two from Noah Urness, in the opening 2:27 of second period to bust open a scoreless game on its way to a 7-2 triumph over Spring Lake Park in the first round of the Roseau Holiday Classic at Memorial Arena.

Austin Klint scored with 5:30 remaining in the second period to put Roseau (6-3-0) ahead 5-0. Spring Lake Park (3-4-2) ended the Rams' shutout bid with a goal by Caden Lichter with 1:40 left in the second.

Urness, a top Mr. Hockey candidate, added a third-period goal to give him 15 this season, tied for eighth most in the state.
