Hockey Night: Late goal lifts Grand Rapids past Eden Prairie

Dec. 15: Sophomore Jameson Duell lifts Thunderhawks; Edina dominant in win over Elk River

Grand Rapids 4, Eden Prairie 3

EDINA - Sophomore forward Jameson Duell scored the winning goal in the closing minutes as Grand Rapids beat Eden Prairie 4-3 on Friday at Braemar Arena in a rematch of the teams that played in a state Class 2A semifinal in 2017.

Grand Rapids (5-4-0), state champs in 2017, jumped out front early after Seth Carlson found the back of the net just six minutes into the first period in the second -round Edina Holiday Classic showdown. 

In the second frame, No. 13-2A Eden Prairie (3-2-0) struck twice with goals by John Kleis and Alex Hall. The Thunderhawks knotted things up with a Jacob Garski goal.

In the third stanza, Garski got Grand Rapids on the board once again as he tallied his second goal of the night. It was Dylan Vornwald, who tied things up once again for the Eagles.

Duell sealed the deal for the Thunderhawks as he scored the game winner with 2:40 left in the third period.

Edina 4, Elk River/Zimmerman 0

EDINA - Goaltender Joe Bertram was required to make just five saves as Edina blanked Elk River 4-0 at Braemar Arena in the second round of the annual Edina Holiday Classic.

Michael Risteau began the scoring for the No. 6-2A Hornets (5-1-0) as he lit the lamp for the only goal of the first period.

Edina added to its lead in the second period when Freddie Schneider found the back of the net. Risteau registered the second assist.

Bobby Cowan extended the Hornets’ lead to three after receiving a right wing feed from Risteau.

Edina sophomore forward Sam Peckham scored his first varsity goal to close the scoring in the third period.

Gavin Greniuk stopped 39 shots for Elk River/Zimmerman (3-3-0).

Buffalo 6, Bemidji 5

BEMIDJI - Eli Tiernan scored the eventual game-winning goal with 1:05 left as Buffalo handed Bemidji a 6-5 loss at the Bemidji Community Arena.

Tiernan scored the game’s first two goals as Buffalo opened a 3-1 lead after the first. The Lumberjacks (2-4-0) rallied with three goals of their own as the teams skated to a 4-4 tie after 34 minutes.

After Evan Hinnenkamp scored his second goal of the night for the Bison (3-2-0), Tiernan’s empty net goal pushed Buffalo’s lead to 6-4. Bemidji’s Dominic Arndt scored with 29 seconds left for the final score.

Prior Lake 4, Chaska 1

PRIOR LAKE - Prior Lake outshot Chaska 48-14 on its way to a 4-1 win at the Dakotah! Ice Center.

The Lakers got first-period goals from Will Emerson and Levi Eiter to take a 2-1 lead. Max Anderson added a goal in the second and Tristan Pownall recorded an empty net goal in the third for Prior Lake (3-3-1).

Brayden Soderstrom scored in the first for Chaska (1-5-0) and Hawks goaltender Tyler Nesheim made 44 saves.

Rock Ridge 2, Little Falls 1

LITTLE FALLS - Sophomore forward Caz Carlson scored both goals for Rock Ridge as it beat Little Falls 2-1 at Exchange Arena.

Carlson scored his goals, his fourth and fifth of the season, 5:40 apart in the second period.

Little Falls' Aaron Marod opened the scoring, putting the No. 13-1A Flyers (4-3-0) ahead 1-0 just 39 seconds into the second period.

Ryan Rothfork made 25 saves for Rock Ridge (5-1-0).
