Hockey Night: Wayzata surges past Benilde-St. Margaret's

Dec. 14: Dominating third period boosts unbeaten Trojans; Delano works OT magic again

Wayzata 6, Benilde-St. Margaret's 3

PLYMOUTH - Luke Miller and Eli Molde scored 52 seconds apart in the third period as Wayzata surged past Benilde-St. Margaret's for a 6-3 victory on Thursday at Plymouth Ice Center in a matchup of unbeaten Section 6AA foes both ranked in the top-five.

The score was tied 1-1 after the first and 3-3 after the second. Then No. 2-2A Wayzata (6-0-0) pulled away with three unanswered goals, the first coming from defenseman Carson Clark 3:20 into the final period.

Caleb Koskie's goal late in the second period pulled No. 5-2A Benilde-St. Margaret's (5-1-0) into a 3-3 tie.

Wayzata outshot the Red Knights, with former Wayzata Bantam AA star Mason McElroy in goal, 29-24.

Delano 5, Minneapolis 4 (OT)

MINNEAPOLIS - Another game, another dramatic overtime victory for Delano, which made it three straight heart-stopping triumphs with a 5-4 win over Minneapolis on junior defenseman Markus Kangas' goal at the Parade Ice Garden.

The teams traded goals seven times, starting in the second period and ending with Kangas' goal, his second of the season, that came 1:48 into overtime.

No. 10-1A Delano (4-2-0) beat Breck and Southwest Christian/Richfield in overtime by identical 4-3 scores in its previous two outings.

Johan Krasean scored twice for No. 18-1A Minneapolis (4-3-0).

Maple Grove 7, Coon Rapids 0

COON RAPIDS - Luke Giuliani had a goal and two assists to lead a balanced Maple Grove offense in the Crimson's 7-0 runaway victory over Coon Rapids at the Coon Rapids Ice Center.

Seven players scored for No. 12-2A Maple Grove (5-2-0) which got 16 saves from goaltender Zach Price.

Will Wagner made 33 saves for Coon Rapids (3-2-0), one of the teams that figured to challenge perennial frontrunners Maple Grove and Rogers for the Section 5AA title.

Stillwater 4, Park of Cottage Grove 1

STILLWATER - Blake Vanek scored twice and added an assist and Alex Reedy stopped 18 shots as Stillwater beat Park of Cottage Grove 4-1 at the St. Croix Valley Rec Center.

Vanek scored the first two goals for the previously winless Ponies as they earned their first victory in their fifth outing of the season.

Owen Corkish's power-play goal midway through the third period pulled previously unbeaten Park of Cottage Grove (3-1-0) to within 3-1.

Northern Lakes 5, Southwest Christian/Richfield 3

RICHFIELD - Northern Lakes, making a rare trip to the Twin Cities metro area, scored the final five goals, including four in the second period, as it rallied to beat Southwest Christian/Richfield 5-3 at Richfield Ice Arena.

Jerome Martin and Drew Paulbeck each scored twice for No. 12-1A Northern Lakes (5-0-0), which fell behind 3-0 early in the second period. The Lightning have scored five or more goals in all five games.

Tate Hardacre, Eli Hoffman and Paul Hornor scored for the Stars (2-2-0).

Sauk-Rapids Rice 8, Mound Westonka 5

MOUND - Elijah Fitch and Chase Hiltner each scored twice for Sauk Rapids-Rice as it outlasted Mound Westonka 8-5 at the Thaler Sports Center.

Fitch and Hiltner each scored in the second period as the Storm (4-2-1) took a 4-1 lead.

Mound Westonka (4-3-0) answered with three straight goals to end the second to forge a 4-4 tie.

Nick Anderson, Fitch and Jackson Dhein scored in the final 5:04 for Sauk Rapids-Rice as it broke a 5-5 tie.

La Crescent-Hokah 5, Rochester Lourdes 4

ROCHESTER - Statescoring leaders Wyatt Farrell and Noah Gillette each scored twice as La Crescent-Hokah held on to beat Section 1A rival Rochester Lourdes 5-3 at Graham Arena.

Farrell's goal, his 14th of the season, put the Lancers (6-1-0) ahead 5-3 early in the third period. Gillette scored a goal in each of the first two periods to give him a state-best 16. He also leads the state in points with 30, one more than Farrell.

Alex Monosmith pulled Lourdes (2-4-0) to within 5-4 with 4:07 remaining.
