Dec. 12: Wolves beat International Falls for first time; D is for drama in Delano; Cathedral continues impressive early season run

Ely 3, International Falls 2

ELY - Deegan Richards scored twice, including the goal that proved to be the game winner, as Ely beat International Falls 3-2 on Tuesday at Ely Ice Arena for what is believed to be the Wolves' first win over the Broncos in a series that dates to the 1950s.

Richards, a senior forward who has six goals this season, opened the scoring with 1:33 left in the first period. His winning goal came 39 seconds into the third period and put Ely (6-2-0) ahead 3-1.

Asher Keep pulled the Broncos (0-3-0) to within 3-2 with 38 seconds remaining.

Ben Leeson made 32 saves for Ely as the Timberwolves were outshot 34-25.

The historic outcome is similar to a Red Lake Falls victory over Thief River Falls last season that is believed to be the Eagles' first win over the Prowlers in another long-running series.
