Hockey Night: Huson, we have a stalemate

Dec. 9: Shakopee goalie Aleksi Huson superb in 1-1 tie with Rogers; Warroad tops Grand Rapids; Cloquet surprises EGF

Rogers 1, Shakopee 1 (OT)

SHAKOPEE - Shakopee goaltender Aleksi Huson stopped a stunning 60 shots as Rogers and the Sabers skated to a 1-1 tie at the Shakopee Ice Center.

Shakopee (5-1-1) opened the scoring on a first-period goal by Cooper Siegert. No. 6-2A Rogers answered with a goal by Brandon Swanson midway through the second.

Huson, a senior, made 24 stops in the third period and another seven in the overtime session. 

Aiden Dietrich made 17 saves for the Royals (5-0-1).

Warroad 5, Grand Rapids 3

WARROAD - Taven James scored two power-play goals in the third period as Warroad beat Grand Rapids 5-3 at The Gardens Arena.

James' first-power play goal came with 9:05 remaining. Following two Warroad penalties, James' second came with 1:34 left. Carson Pilgrim assisted on both of James' goals.

The teams were tied 1-1 after the first following goals by Pilgrim and Grand Rapids' Bauer Murphy.

The teams traded goals in the second period with the Thunderhawks' Jacob Garski scoring on a power play with 33 seconds remaining for a 3-3 tie.

Pilgrim scored both of the second-period goals for No. 2-1A Warroad (5-1-0).

Murphy added an assist for the No. 19-2A Thunderhawks (4-3-0), who lost for the second straight night. Roseau rallied to beat Grand Rapids 3-2 on Friday.

Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 3, East Grand Forks 2

EAST GRAND FORKS - Jace Stewart and Karson Young each had a goal and an assist as Cloquet/Esko/Carlton upended East Grand Forks 3-2 at the East Grand Forks Civic Center.

Grady Knutson's goal midway through the second period put the No. 11-1A Lumberjacks (3-1-1) ahead 3-0.

No. 3-1A East Grand Forks (4-3-0) rallied behind third-period goals scored 15 seconds apart by Landon Jamieson and Brock Schultz.

The Lumberjacks moved down from Class 2A and in February will play in the Class 1A playoffs for the first time.

Benilde-St. Margaret's 3, Stillwater 2

STILLWATER - Junior Podein's goal with 31 seconds left in the second period broke a tie and lifted Benilde-St. Margaret's past Stillwater 3-2 and the St. Croix Valley Rec Center.

The win was the fourth in as many games to start the season for the No. 12-2A Red Knights, who also have defeated high-powered Edina and Andover.

Dylan Popehn and Ben Norris also scored for Benilde-St. Margaret's, which got a 20-save performance from senior goaltender Mason McElroy.

Blake Vanek and Carson Kingbay scored for Stillwater (0-4-0).

Duluth Denfeld 3, Orono 1

DULUTH - Valterri Luhtalampi scored twice as Duluth Denfeld earned a surprising 3-1 win over Orono at the Heritage Sports Center.

Luhtalampi opened the scoring midway through the first period and added an empty net goal with 17 seconds remaining.

Tommy Lewin scored the lone goal for No. 7-1A Orono (4-2-0).

The win was the second straight over a quality opponent for Duluth Denfeld (4-2-0), which beat Cloquet/Esko/Carlton on Dec. 7.

The two goals give Luhtalampi, a junior, seven this season. His 19 points are tied for third most in the state.

Wayzata 6, Andover 2

PLYMOUTH - Wayzata scored the first five goals to build a commanding lead then survived a third period Andover mini-rally to beat the Huskies 6-2 at the Plymouth Ice Center.

Six players scored for the No. 4-2A Trojans, who improved to 5-0-0 with the victory.

Luke Babineau and Cole Jensen scored third period goals for the No. 11-2A Huskies (2-4-0), who have played one of the state's most difficult schedules to open the season.

Hermantown 5, Centennial 0

HERMANTOWN - Hermantown goaltender Dane Callaway stopped all 25 shots he faced to lead the Hawks to a 5-0 victory against Centennial at Hermantown Ice Arena.

Senior forward Andrew Johnson Jr. scored twice - his first two goals of the season - for unbeaten No. 1-1A Hermantown (2-0-1). Johnson opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal midway through the first period and completed the scoring with 1:38 remaining.

Callaway, a leading candidate for the Frank Brimsek Award that goes to the state's top senior goaltender, ranks No. 1 statewide in goals-against average (0.95) and save percentage (.969).

The loss was the first of the season for No. 18-2A Centennial (3-1-1).
