Hockey Night: Freshman spoils return of former STMA coach

Nov. 28: St. Michael-Albertville tops Jerr Johnson-led Brainerd in OT; La Crescent's Wyatt Farrell begins quest for goal-scoring record in style

St. Michael-Albertville 3, Brainerd 2 (OT)

ALBERTVILLE - Freshman Owen Volkenant scored 2:01 into overtime to lift St. Michael-Albertville past Brainerd 3-2 at St. Michael-Albertville Arena, spoiling a homecoming of sorts for first-year Warriors coach Jerr Johnson.

Johnson was the head coach at St. Michael-Albertville for 17 seasons, posting 240 victories and leading the Knights to the state Class 2A tournament in 2018, their only tourney appearance.

St. Michael-Albertville (1-0-0) led 2-0 late in the opening period when Kade Stengrim scored the first of his two goals for Brainerd (0-1-0).

Volkenant cut to the middle of the ice from the right boards and fired a shot that eluded the catching glove of Knights goaltender Noah Sutlief.

Chanhassen 6, Shakopee 1

VICTORIA - Gavin Uhlenkamp and Caden Lee each scored twice as Chanhassen halted a surprising two-game winless streak to start the season by easing past previously unbeaten Shakopee.

Uhlenkamp, a senior committed to Wisconsin, scored twice in the opening period. Lee, a senior committed to Minnesota State, scored a goal in each of the second and third periods.

Peyton Chase scored the lone goal for Shakopee (2-1-0).

No. 2-2A Chanhassen (1-2-0) rebounded from season-opening losses to Andover and Rosemount.

La Crescent-Hokah 7, Black River Falls (Wis.) 4

BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. - La Crescent-Hokah senior Wyatt Farrell began his quest to become the state's all-time career goal-scoring leader in impressive fashion, scoring a hat trick in the first period in the Lancers' 7-4 win over Black River Falls, Wis., at Milt Lunda Memorial Arena.

Farrell entered the season with 144 goals, 12th on the all-time list and 52 behind from Little Falls star Ben Hanowski's record total of 196. He finished with three against the Tigers (1-3-0).

La Crescent (1-0-0) led 4-0 after the opening period and 6-2 heading into the third. The Lancers outshot Black River Falls 72-39.

Luverne 2, Marshall 1 (OT)

LUVERNE - Owen Sudenga scored two minutes into overtime to lift Luverne past Big South Conference and Section 3A rival Marshall 2-1 at Blue Mound Ice Arena.

The goal was the second of the game for Sudenga, a senior forward. He opened the scoring in the first period.

Carson Kopitski's power-play goal in the second period pulled Marshall (1-2-0) into a 1-1 tie. 

Marshall goalie Nathan Lenz made 34 saves compared to just 13 for Tyler Arends of Luverne (1-0-0).

St. Cloud Cathedral 4, Providence Academy 3

ST. CLOUD - Andrew Dwinnell scored twice and Joey Gillespie had a goal and two assists as St. Cloud Cathedral held on to beat Providence Academy 4-3 at the Municipal Athletic Complex.

Dwinnell's goal 1:40 into the final period put the No. 6-1A Crusaders (2-0-1) ahead 4-2. Louie Wehman scored with 1:42 remaining to pull the No. 20-1A Lions (0-3-0) to within a goal.

Centnnial 4, Prior Lake 4 (OT)

PRIOR LAKE - Centennial forward Logan Adams' goal with 4:03 remaining in the third period forced overtime in an eventual 4-4 tie with Prior Lake at the Dakotah! Ice Center.

The teams from opposite ends of the metro traded scoring runs.  A three-goal outburst by Centennial (2-0-1) in the first period put the Cougars ahead 3-1.

Prior Lake scored the next three goals spanning the second period and part of the third to go ahead 4-3. Matthew Pavek scored twice for the Lakers.

Mounds View 3, Blake 2

VADNAIS HEIGHTS - Chase Ballinger's goal midway through the third period held up as the winner as Mounds View rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat Blake at TCO Sports Garden.

Finn Woerner scored a goal in each of the first and second period to give Blake (0-1-0) a 2-0 lead heading into the third. 

Zach Baird and Johnny Conlin, a Mr. Hockey candidate, scored for Mounds View (1-0-0) in the second, setting up Ballinger's winner.
