Hockey Night: Andover upends Chanhassen

Nov. 24: Huskies surprise Storm, White Bear Lake outlasts Duluth East, Champlin Park's Solomon scores six

Andover 3, Chanhassen 2

MINNETONKA - Sophomore forward Casey Rodgers scored twice, including the winner 1:26 into the third period, as Andover upended Chanhassen 3-2 on Friday at the Pagel Activity Center in the opening round of the Tonka Thanksgiving Preview.

No. 2-2A Chanhassen took a 2-1 lead with 1:28 left in the second period on a goal by Caden Lee. Rodgers scored with 36 seconds left in the second to tie the score at 2.

No. 11-2A Andover, rebuilding after losing its outstanding forward trio of Gavyn Thoreson, Cayden Casey and Cooper Conway, got a brilliant performance from junior Cal Conway, Cooper's brother. Cal Conway made 32 saves to earn the victory.

Chanhassen's Kam Hendrickson, among the favorites to win the Frank Brimsek Award that goes to the state's top senior goaltender, stopped 10 of 13 shots.

White Bear Lake 4, Duluth East 3 (OT)

VADNAIS HEIGHTS - Senior forward Nolan Roed scored 2:37 into overtime to lift White Bear Lake past Duluth East 4-3 at the TCO Sports Garden in the season opener for both teams.

Roed, a leading Mr. Hockey candidate, opened the scoring 21 seconds into the first period and No. 10-2A White Bear Lake never trailed.

Thomas Gunderson scored with 3:05 left in the third to pull No. 16-2A Duluth East into a 3-3 tie. 

Kole Kronstedt finished with 28 saves for Duluth East; Leo Gabriel had 24 for White Bear Lake.

Champlin Park 9, St. Louis Park 4

WOODBURY - Junior forward Brent Solomon scored four unanswered goals in the first period and finished with a stunning six goals to lead Champlin Park to a 9-4 victory over St. Louis Park in a semifinal of the Woodbury Thanksgiving Tournament.

Solomon entered the game with career totals of three goals and three assists. After his first-period outburst, he added one goal in each of the second and third periods.

Minnetonka 10, Rosemount 3

MINNETONKA - Gavin Garry and Javon Moore each scored three goals as Minnetonka opened defense of its state Class 2A championship with a resounding 10-3 win over Rosemount in the opening round of the Tonka Thanksgiving Preview at the Pagel Activity Center.

Rosemount opened the scoring 2:46 into the opening period and the Irish and Skippers were tied 2-2 midway through the first.

Minnetonka pulled away by scoring five unanswered goals, uncluding a pair from Garry. Luke Garry, Gavin's twin brother, had a goal and four assists.

Two of Moore's goals came on the power play.

Edina 3, Maple Grove 0

PLYMOUTH - Joe Bertram made 36 saves and Jackson Nevers scored a shorthanded goal and added an assist as Edina opened its season with a 3-0 win over Maple Grove.

Robbie Hoch and Bobby Cowan also scored for the No. 3-2A Hornets. 

Zach Price made 14 saves for No. 14-2A Maple Grove.

Warroad 6, Delano 3

WARROAD - Senior forward Carson Pilgrim, a top Mr. Hockey candidate, scored three goals to lead Warroad past Delano 6-3 at The Gardens Arena.

Pilgrim scored the first three goals for the No. 2-1A Warriors, who twice exchanged goals with the No. 9-1A Tigers before scoring three unanswered to end the second period.

Northfield 5, Providence Academy 4

ST. PAUL - Providence Academy's Louie Wehman and Northfield's Kam Kaiser, two of the state's top scorers last season and potential Mr. Hockey finalists, each scored twice but it was Kaiser's goal late in the third period that lifted the Raiders to a 5-4 triumph over the Lions in the first round of the Charity Shield Classic at the TRIA Rink.

No. 20-1A Providence Academy led 4-2 after goals early in the third period from Wehmann and Gavin Sattler. No. 5-1A Northfield rallied by scoring the final three goals in a span of 3:06. Kaiser's winning goal came with 4:03 remaining.

Rochester Century/John Marshall 6, Cambridge-Isanti 3

ST. PAUL - The newly formed co-operative between longtime rivals Rochester John Marshall and Rochester Century proved to be a formidable pairing, as it outlasted Cambridge-Isanti 6-3 in the first round of the Charity Shield Classic at the TRIA Rink.

Brekken DeWeese scored twice to open the first period for the new-look Panthers, who reeled off four unanswered goals in parts of the second and third periods to take a 6-2 lead.

East Grand Forks 5, Gentry Academy 2

EAST GRAND FORKS - Senior Landon Jamieson scored three goals, and his third gave No. 3-1A East Grand Forks a two-goal cushion late in the third period en route to a 5-2 triumph over Gentry Academy at the East Grand Forks Civic Center.

Gentry Academy closed to within 3-2 just 41 seconds into the third period on a shorthanded goal by Easton Rooney.

Brock Schultz had three assists for No. 3-2A East Grand Forks.
