Inside Scoop

Alexandria has become such a fixture in section championship games in recent years that enterprising students now show up with confetti cannons, eager to add to the postgame ambiance.

Indeed, oblong bits of red, black and white paper were fluttering from St. Cloud’s Municipal Athletic Complex rafters seconds after Leo Kompelien scored in overtime to give the Cardinals a 5-4 Section 6A title game win over Fergus Falls.

Alexandria has reached the state Class 1A tournament three times in the last six years, but St. Paul never felt so far away as it did on Dec. 28 when the Cardinals, playing in a holiday tournament in Roseau, lost their seventh straight game to start the season.

“We don’t want to start 0-and-7 or 1-and-9 like we did, but it also taught us a lot early on in the season,” Alexandria coach Josh Meyers said. “You want to be playing your best hockey at the end.”

Mission accomplished.

Alexandria enters the state tournament having won six straight and 12 of its last 14 games.
