Inside Scoop

It's hard to say Charlie Drage's name and not follow it with David Wolsfeld's. Or vice versa.

Drage from Wolsfeld. Wolsfeld from Drage.

For any given Mahtomedi home game, the public address announcer at the St. Croix Recreation Center needed only to pre-program those two options into the sound system and three-quarters of the night’s work was done.

It was only fitting that Drage and Wolsfeld both reached the 100-point milestone for their careers in a 9-1 section semifinal victory over St. Paul Academy. The three-year varsity regulars have played together so long they no longer bother looking for each other when passing. The puck just knows.

Mahtomedi makes its sixth state tournament appearance in eight years with those twin engines powering a multifaceted offense. Throw in a deep and talented defensive corps and Charlie Brandt having settled in nicely as the No. 1 goaltender and the Zephyrs, winners of nine straight, appear to be fully stocked to assume their usual position in the semifinals.

To get beyond that point might take a couple well-timed goals from two longtime linemates. You know, Drage from Wolsfeld.

Or vice versa.
