Inside Scoop

Before Orono’s Bradley Walker ratcheted into full-blown celebration mode (dumping water bottles on his coach’s head, accidentally disassembling the championship trophy, leaping atop the St. Louis park rec center boards) he paused for a quiet, tender moment with his most beloved goaltender.

the scene of Walker and Brock peyton locked in a long hug and sharing a few heartfelt words after the Spartans beat Delano for the Section 2a title served as a stark contrast to the mayhem that followed. It was a touchstone moment nonetheless, given all that the two seniors have meant to an Orono program making its first state tournament appearance since it won the class 1a title in 2018.

“Bradley is, I think, the best 200-foot player in the state,” Orono coach Sean Fish said. “He wins draws, he blocks shots, he’s physical, he plays the game the right way.”

If Walker is Orono’s heart and soul, then peyton is the Spartans’ backbone.
“I wouldn’t trade him for any other goalie in the word,” Walker said. “I don’t care who it is.”
