Hockey Night: Gentry Academy upends No. 1 seed White Bear Lake

March 1: Stars score five unanswered goals in Section 4AA semifinal; Hermantown, Northfield, Luverne advance to Class 1A state tournament

Section 4AA Semifinal

Gentry Academy 5, White Bear Lake 1

MAPLEWOOD - No. 4 seed Gentry Academy recovered from an early deficit to stun No. 1 seed White Bear Lake 5-1 on Wednesday in a Section 4AA semifinal at Aldrich Arena.

No. 12-2A White Bear Lake (20-6-0) took the lead when Grady Gallatin scored 19 seconds into the game. Gentry Academy (19-8-0) evened the score with 14:56 left in the first on Reese Shaw's goal.

The Stars took a 2-1 lead when Ryder Betzold scored with 12:08 to play in the first. The Stars added goals by Max von Klinggraeff and Easton Rooney in the second and one by Eli Bailey in the third.

Anthony Zolezzi made 33 saves for Gentry Academy, which saw Betzold, Shaw and Justin Obrochta each finish with two assists.

The Stars have won seven-straight while the loss snapped a six-game win streak for the Bears, the first No. 1 seed to lose in this year's section playoffs.

Section 4AA Semifinal

Hill-Murray 3, Woodbury 1

MAPLEWOOD - Special teams helped No. 3 seed Hill-Murray record a 3-1 win over No. 7 seed Woodbury in a Section 4AA semifinal at Aldrich Arena. 

Hill-Murray (13-13-1) used a power-play goal by Graham Greeder to take a 1-0 lead in the second period and the Pioneers went up 2-0 when Boden Sampair scored a shorthanded goal with 10:39 left in the third.

Woodbury (12-14-1) cut the lead to 2-1 when Matthew Tarlton scored with 1:09 remaining but the Pioneers' Caden Sampair closed the scoring with an empty-net goal with 11 seconds left.

Jack Erickson made 24 saves for Hill-Murray while Kam Carlson had 34 saves for Woodbury.

Section 7A Championship

Hermantown 3, Rock Ridge 1

DULUTH - Junior forward Dallas Vieau scored what proved to be the game winner for No. 1 seed Hermantown with 12.2 seconds left in the second period as the Hawks defeated No. 2 seed Rock Ridge 3-1 in the Section 7A championship game at Amsoil Arena.

Aaron Evjen opened the scoring for No. 2-1A Hermantown (25-2-1) with a goal with 2:45 left in the second.

No. 8-1A Rock Ridge (18-9-1) made it 2-1 with Dylan Hedley's goal early in the third period.

Hermantown freshman River Freeman scored an empty-net goal with 9.9 seconds remaining.

Ryan Rothfork made 41 saves for the Wolverines, who won their first two section playoffs games by a combined score of 21-1.

Section 1A Championship

Northfield 6, New Prague 0

ROCHESTER - No. 1 seed Northfield surged to a three-goal lead less than 6 minutes into the opening period en route to a 6-0 win over New Prague in the Section 1A Championship at the Rochester Recreation Center.

Cayden Monson scored three goals and Keaton Walock made 24 saves for No. 6-1A Northfield (23-5-0). Monson scored twice in the first and then completed the hat trick with his second power-play goal in the second.

The shutout was Walock's 10th of the season and 22nd of his career.

No. 17-1A New Prague, last year's section champion, ends its season at 16-11-1.

Section 3A Championship

Luverne 4, New Ulm 2

ST. PETER - Blaik Bork scored two power-play goals as No. 2 seed Luverne beat No. 1 seed New Ulm 4-2 in the Section 1A championship game at Lund Arena on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus.

Luverne (21-6-1) opened the scoring on a goal by Brady Bork 1:59 into the first period. No. 19-1A New Ulm (23-3-1) evened the score midway in the first, then Blaik Bork scored on a power-play midway through the second to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead after two periods.

Blaik Bork scored his second power-play goal 70 seconds into the final period. New Ulm's Bryer Lang made it 3-2 but Elliott Domagala pushed the Cardinals' lead to 4-2 with his goal with 7:31 remaining.

Luverne lost by scores of 2-1 and 3-1 to New Ulm in the regular season.
