ELK RIVER - Andrew Dwinnell's power-play goal with 2:51 remaining in the second overtime boosted St. Cloud Cathedral to a 4-3 win over Little Falls in the Section 5A championship game at the Furniture and Things Community Event Center.
Dwinnell's game-winning goal was on a slap shot from the left circle following a pass from Griffin Sturm. The Crusaders were on the power play after a tripping penalty was assessed to the Flyers.
The Crusaders' snapped a two-game losing streak to Little Falls this season as the Flyers beat St. Cloud Cathedral 4-3 on Feb. 2 and 4-2 on Feb. 7. The Feb. 2 win started a seven-game win streak for the Flyers.
No. 7-1A Little Falls (18-8-1) built a 3-0 lead following goals by Matt Fillippi, who scored twice in the opening five minutes and then added a power-play goal 3:15 into the second for the Flyers.
Dwinnell started the comeback for No. 15-1A St. Cloud Cathedral (15-12-0) with a power-play goal with 4:31 remaining in the second. Jaeger Wood scored with nine seconds to play to make it 3-2.
Landon Swenson tied the game with 6:48 to play in the third.
After neither team scored in the first overtime, it took the Crusaders more than 14 minutes to complete the comeback on Dwinnell's goal.
St. Cloud Cathedral outshot the Flyers 58-27. Freshman Izaak Kalis made 54 saves for Little Falls.
