Hockey Night: Edina KOs Benilde-St. Margaret's

Feb. 25: Hornets knock Red Knights out of playoffs for second straight year; Woodbury upends Stillwater

Edina 5, Benilde-St. Margaret's 2

BLOOMINGTON - No. 2 seed Edina made the most of its shots on goal as the Hornets beat No. 3 seed Benilde-St. Margaret's 5-2 in a Section 6AA semifinal on Saturday at the Bloomington Ice Garden.

Edina led 2-1 after two periods and Charlie Sandven extended the lead to 3-1 early in the third. Jackson Nevers made it 4-1 with 6:34 remaining.

Peter Giertsen scored his second goal to pull the Red Knights to within 4-2 with 4:08 to play but Mason West's power-play goal at 1:33 clinched it for Edina.

No. 9-2A Benilde-St. Margaret's (18-9-0) took a 1-0 lead early in the first on Giertsen's first goal of the night. No. 3-2A Edina (19-6-1) scored two goals to end the first before netting the third period's first two goals.

Bobby Cowan scored on the power play to tie the game at 1-1 and John Warpinski scored with six minutes left in the opening period to give the Hornets a 2-1 lead.

Robbie Clarkowski made 31 saves for Edina while Mason McElroy stopped 20 shots for Benilde-St. Margaret's.

Edina beat Benilde-St. Margaret's 4-0 in last year's section title game.

Woodbury 1, Stillwater 0 (OT)

MAPLEWOOD - Ethan Hansen's shot from the left side gave No. 7 seed Woodbury a stunning 1-0 overtime win over No. 2 seed Stillwater in a Section 4AA quarterfinal at Aldrich Arena.

All three games played between the teams this season have gone to overtime. Stillwater defeated the Royals 4-3 Jan. 24 while Woodbury defeated the Ponies 3-2 Feb. 2.

Hansen's shot came after a scramble in front of the net, forcing the puck to come loose. Woodbury initially stole a cross-ice pass to set up a scoring attempt and Hansen's game winner.

Kam Carlson stopped all 32 shots faced for the Royals (12-13-1).

Tomas Anderson made 27 saves for Stillwater (14-9-3).

Waconia 6, Providence Academy 3

PLYMOUTH - No. 7 Waconia scored four unanswered goals in the second and third periods as it rallied for a 6-3 upset victory over Providence Academy in a Section 2A quarterfinal at the Plymouth Ice Center.

Waconia trailed 3-2 after the opening period but Gavin Brink's goal with 8:56 left in the second period put the Wildcats (15-12-0) ahead for 4-3.

Colton Rieck and Mitch Nelson also scored in the second for Waconia as it took a 5-3 lead into the third.

Luke Puchner's empty net goal with 1:23 remaining clinched the victory as Waconia advanced to a section semifinal for the first time in the program's 15-year history.

White Bear Lake 4, Tartan 3 (OT)

MAPLEWOOD - Grady Gallatin scored with 1:20 remaining in overtime to lift No. 1 seed White Bear Lake to a 4-3 win over No. 8 seed Tartan in a Section 4AA quarterfinal at Aldrich Arena.

No. 12-2A White Bear Lake (20-5-0) led 3-1 after two periods following second-period goals by Joe Belisle and Charlie Olsen.

Tartan (6-20-0) tied the game with goals 69 seconds apart. Gavin Buche scored with 5:58 remaining and Noah Joyce followed with the tying goal at 4:49.

Will Distad scored in the first for the Bears. Brody Laska countered with a power-play goal for Tartan.

Nolan Roed and Brady Borgestad each had two assists for White Bear Lake. Laska added two assists to go with his first-period goal.

Wayzata 5, Holy Angels 3

BLOOMINGTON - No. 1 seed Wayzata opened a 4-0 lead after two periods but needed to hang on after No. 5 seed Holy Angels erupted for three goals in three minutes in a Section 6AA semifinal at the Bloomington Ice Garden.

First-period goals from Jibber Kuhl, Brittan Alstead and Rhys Wallin gave No. 6-2A Wayzata (19-6-2) a 3-0 lead. Jake Mattson added a power-play goal in the second to give the Trojans a 4-0 lead.

Holy Angels (19-7-1) started its comeback with a power-play goal by Mason Garcia with 10:33 left. Two minutes later Lincoln Ayers Assad scored for the Stars and 59 seconds later Henrik Nelson made it a 4-3 game.

Mattson scored 27 seconds later to push the Wayzata lead to 5-3.

Roseau 6, Elk River/Zimmerman 1

ROSEAU - Roseau scored its first two goals shorthanded as the No. 2-seed Rams defeated No. 6 seed Elk River/Zimmerman 6-1 in a Section 8AA semifinal at Roseau Memorial Arena.

Noah Urness scored two goals, including the first shorthanded goal of the night, for No. 20-2A Roseau (17-9-1). Urness later added a power-play goal.

Also scoring for the Rams were Gavin Jensen, Preston Lundbohm, Austin Klint and James Jacques. Jensen, who scored the Rams' other shorthanded goal, added two assists as did Aaron Wensloff and Lundbohm.

Kole Mears scored in the first for Elk River/Zimmerman (11-16-0), which upset Roseau 4-3 in a section semifinal last season.

The Rams outshot the Elks 42-23.

Lakeville North 3, Rochester Mayo 2 (OT)

ROCHESTER - Sam Swanson scored 57 seconds into in overtime to give No. 3 seed Lakeville North a 3-2 victory over No. 2 seed Rochester Mayo in a Section 1AA semifinal at the Rochester Recreation Center.

Swanson's improbably goal from the left side of the net propels Lakeville North (13-14-0) into Thursday's section championship against Lakeville South.

Rochester Mayo (19-5-2) opened the scoring on Cohen Ruskell's goal in a 4-on-4 situation but the Panthers' Griffin Kranz scored following a Mayo turnover to even the game in the first.

Hayden Konik gave the Panthers their first lead on his rebound goal with 7:14 remaining in regulation. Mayo's Jacob Brown tapped in a rebound to even the game with 4:25 left.

New Prague 7, Albert Lea 5

ROCHESTER - No. 2 seed New Prague scored three goals in the final 2:20 to record a 7-5 win over No. 3 seed Albert Lea in a Section 1A semifinal at the Rochester Recreation Center.

The game was tied four times, including at the end of the first and second periods.

New Prague tied it 5-5 on a Breck Hagen's goal from the slot with 2:22 to play. Will Seymour scored with 24 seconds left and then he added an empty-net goal with eight seconds remaining.

No. 17-1A New Prague (16-10-1), the defending section champion, scored three times on the power play, taking advantage of 4-on-3, 5-on-4 and 5-on-3 opportunities.

Connor Pirsig gave Albert Lea (19-7-1) the lead just 2:22 into the first period. New Prague evened the score on Braeden Woitas' goal about 7 minutes later.

The first of New Prague's power-play goals was scored by  Michael Beckius to put New Prague ahead 2-1 one minute into the first. Joseph Yoon's high shot evened the score. The Tigers then took a 3-2 lead when Max Edwin put back a rebound.

John Schmidt scored on a 5-on-3 power play for the Trojans to tie it 3-3 after two periods.

With New Prague on a 4-on-3 power play, Seymour gave the Trojans a 4-3 lead 20 seconds into the third.

Albert Lea's Eli Farris first shot of a face-off was stopped but his second shot evened the score with 13:42 remaining. Farris hit the pipe on his next shot but Edwin scored his second goal of the night off a face-off.
