Hockey Night: Coon Rapids, Chanhassen end long playoff droughts

Feb. 21: Cardinals beat Cloquet, Storm rout Bloomington Jefferson for long-awaited wins

Coon Rapids 6, Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 3

CLOQUET - Coon Rapids scored three unanswered goals in the third period en route to a 6-3 win over Cloquet/Esko/Carlton in a Section 7AA quarterfinal at the Cloquet Area Recreation Center.

With the victory the No. 5-seeded Cardinals (12-12-2) advance to a section semifinal for the first time since the 2002-23 season. They had lost in the first round or quarterfinals 19 straight years.

Eli Boden scored the eventual game winner with 13:50 remaining. Nolan Hazelwood and Roan Bresnahan added third-period goals for the Cardinals, who were outshot 42-26.

Will Wagner made 39 saves for Coon Rapids.

Coon Rapids and No. 4 seed Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (14-9-1) traded goals in the first. After Lucas Rauner scored on the power play for the Lumberjacks, Cayden Alpin evened the game for Coon Rapids.

The teams also traded goals in the second. Rauner opened the period's scoring but Trenton Theisen and Tyler Barness scored 88 seconds apart for Coon Rapids. Cole Painovich scored a power-play goal with 2:19 left in the second to tie the game 3-3.

Chanhassen 9, Bloomington Jefferson 0

VICTORIA - Jack Christ, Caden Lee and Brayden Willis each scored twice as No. 1 seed Chanhassen recorded the first playoff victory in program history, beating No. 8 seed Bloomington Jefferson 9-0 in a Section 2AA quarterfinal at the Victoria Recreation Center.

The win snapped a streak of 12 straight playoff losses dating to the 2010-11 season, the Storm's first as a standalone varsity program. Included in that run of playoff losses were two straight to Bloomington Jefferson in 2010-11 and 2011-12.

Kam Hendrickson made seven saves for his ninth shutout this season for No. 2-2A Chanhassen (23-3-0).

Lee, Evan Miller and Jake Risch each had two assists for the Storm.

Luke Swanson made 49 saves for Bloomington Jefferson (3-22-1).

Elk River/Zimmerman 3, Buffalo 1

BUFFALO - Braden Hansberger scored in the first and second periods to lead No. 6 seed Elk River/Zimmerman to a 3-1 upset win over No. 3 seed Buffalo in a Section 8AA quarterfinal at the Buffalo Civic Center.

Hansberger scored on the power play in the first for Elk River/Zimmerman (11-15-0) and scored an even-strength goal in the second.

Sam Sylvester scored for Buffalo (13-11-2) with 10:19 to play but Preston Holmes scored a shorthanded insurance goal for the Elks with 40 seconds left.

Gavin Greniuk stopped 34 shots for the Elk River/Zimmerman, which was outshot 35-16.

Eastview 4, Park of Cottage Grove 3 (OT)

APPLE VALLEY - Tyler Cords scored 2:46 into overtime to give No. 4 seed Eastview a 4-3 win over No. 5 seed Park of Cottage Grove in a Section 3AA quarterfinal at the Apple Valley Sports Arena.

Zach Wooten gave the Lightning a 3-2 lead with 3:57 to play. Park's Owen Corkish scored with 2:46 remaining to send the game to overtime.

No. 16-2A Eastview (17-9-0) led 2-1 after the second period following goals by Charlie Ortman and John Kisch.

Park of Cottage Grove (16-9-1) tied the game  with 10:52 left in regulation on a goal by Gavin Moss.

Jackson Rudh had a second-period goal to go with two assists for Park of Cottage Grove.

Cambridge-Isanti 6, Princeton 4

ISANTI - Will O'Donovan's hat trick led No. 5 seed Cambridge-Isanti to a 6-4  Section 5A quarterfinal win over No. 4 seed Princeton at the Isanti Ice Arena.

Cambridge-Isanti (17-9-0) led 6-2 after O'Donovan's third goal with 12:57 remaining. The Bluejackets scored four goals in the second period, with the last two coming 21 seconds apart, to take a 5-2 lead.

Princeton (13-13-0) scored two goals 17 seconds apart in the final minutes of the third. Eli Gibbs had a goal and an assist for the Tigers.

The Bluejackets outshot Princeton 50-27.

Monticello 2, Pine City 1

MONTICELLO - Brady Bergstrom's goal with 1 minute left in the second period powered No. 2 seed Monticello to a surprisingly difficult 2-1 win over No. 7 seed Pine City in a Section 5A quarterfinal at Moose Sherritt Ice Arena.

No. 20-1A Monticello (16-9-1) led 1-0 when Tyler Miller scored early in the second period. Pine City (12-14-1) tied the score on McCall Leger's goal 76 seconds later.

Owen Soderholm made 30 saves for Monticello. Aaron Rootkie stopped 38 shots for Pine City.

The game was marred by 17 penalties, 15 of them called in the third period.

Park Rapids 2, Crookston 1 (OT)

PARK RAPIDS - Kale Ravnaas scored 4:35 into overtime to complete No. 8 seed Park Rapids' to a 2-1 comeback win over No. 9 seed Crookston at Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena in a Section 8A first-round contest.

Crookston (5-19-1) took the lead on Jack Doda's goal with 9:40 remaining in the second.

Park Rapids (14-11-1) evened the score when Joey Hillukka scored with 1:49 left in the middle period.

The Panthers outshot Crookston 36-17.

Minnetonka 4, Chaska 0

MINNETONKA - Luke Garry and Ashton Schultz each scored a goal and added an assist as No. 2 seed Minnetonka won its 15th-straight game, this one a 4-0 decision over No. 7 seed Chaska in a Section 2AA quarterfinal at the Pagel Activity Center.

Kaizer Nelson made 18 saves for his seventh shutout this season for No. 1-2A Minnetonka (24-2-0).

Tyler Nesheim made 37 saves for Chaska (8-17-1).

Rochester Lourdes 5, Waseca 4

ROCHESTER - Sophomore forward Colton Rich one-timed a centering pass for a goal with 1.8 seconds left in regulation to lift No. 8 seed Rochester Lourdes to a 5-4 come-from-behiind victory over No. 9 seed Waseca in a first-round Section 1A playoff game at Graham Arena.

Sophomore Jack Roe spun and fired the puck from the right boards to an open Rich, who redirected the puck past the outstretched right leg of Waseca goaltender Carter Martens. The goal was Rich's 14th of the season, tied for the most on the team.

Waseca (10-15-0) built leads of 2-0 and 3-1 with two of the goals coming from sophomore defenseman Hunter Anderson.

A.J. Ritter scored back-to-back goals in the third period to put Lourdes (10-16-0) ahead 4-3. Waseca tied it at 4-4 with 34 seconds remaining on Lucas Groll's power-play goal.

Lourdes outshot Waseca 43-26.

Waseca played without star forward Kyle Ahlschlager, a senior who was serving a one-game suspension for a game-misconduct penalty against Marshall on Feb. 17. Ahlschlager finished his career as the Bluejays all-time leading scorer with 191 points, including a school-record 107 goals.
