Hockey Night: Maple Grove sweeps regular season series with Andover

Feb. 11: Lucas Busch scores winning goal for Crimson; Minnetonka shuts out Edina; Northfield's Walock gets 20th career shutout

Maple Grove 3, Andover 2

MAPLE GROVE - Lucas Busch scored with 5:39 remaining to give Maple Grove a 3-2 win over Andover in a meeting of top 10-ranked Class 2A teams on Saturday at the Maple Grove Community Center. Maple Grove snapped Andover's 10-game win streak.

Busch's goal finished a pretty three-way passing play that started with Blake Steenerson stealing the puck near the blue line and included Ty Patefield's feed through the slot.

Maple Grove has won both games between the teams this season. The teams met in the 2022 Class 2A state tournament championship game, won by Andover 6-5 in double overtime.

No. 8-2A Maple Grove (17-5-1) got on the board first with Grant Leneau's first-period goal.

No. 5-2A Andover (17-6-1) tied the game at 1-1 4:12 into the second on a goal by Cayden Casey. The Crimson then took the lead again when Busch scored with 9:26 left in the period on the power play.

Andover tied the scored at 2-2 2:40 into the third on a goal by Cooper Conway, setting the stage for Busch's game winner.

Minnetonka 1, Edina 0

EDINA - Luke Garry scored with 7:46 left in the third period and Kaiser Nelson made 20 saves as Minnetonka blanked Edina 1-0 at Braemar Arena.

The shutout was Nelson's sixth of the season and second in as many games for No. 1-2A Minnetonka (20-2-0). The Skippers have won 12 straight games and not allowed a goal in the last 10 periods.

Robbie Clarkowski stopped 22 shots for No. 3-2A Edina (16-4-1).

Northfield 8, Mankato East 0

NORTHFIELD - Northfield goalkeeper Keaton Walock recorded his eighth shutout of the season and 20th in his career as the Raiders defeated Mankato East 8-0 at Northfield Ice Arena.

The shutout was the sixth in Walock's last eight games, which included a streak of 190 shutout minutes.

Cayden Monson and Kamden Kaiser each scored two goals for No. 6-1A Northfield (18-5-0).

Brody Kunst made 40 saves for Mankato East (8-14-0)

Duluth East 3, Rogers 1

DULUTH - Kole Kronstedt stopped 35 shots as Duluth East won its ninth straight game by upsetting Rogers 3-1 at the Heritage Sports Center.

Thomas Gunderson scored with 39 seconds left in the second period to give No. 13-2A Duluth East (17-6-1) a 2-1 lead. The Greyhounds added an empty-net goal by Grant Winkler with 1:29 left in the third.

Caden Cole scored for Duluth East 25 seconds into the first period. No. 4-2A Rogers (15-5-3) tied it with Mason Jenson's goal at 4:15.

St. Thomas Academy 1, Hill-Murray 0

MAPLEWOOD - Sophomore forward Mikey Milan scored in the first period and Tyler Magozzi made 26 saves to lift St. Thomas Academy to a 1-0 win over Hill-Murray in a Metro East Conference matchup of top 20-ranked Class 2A teams.

The shutout was Magozzi's fourth of the season.

No. 7-2A St. Thomas Academy (17-6-0) won for the seventh time in eight games.

Jack Erickson stopped 23 shots for No. 18-2A Hill-Murray (11-11-1).

White Bear Lake 3, Stillwater 2 (OT)

VADNAIS HEIGHTS - Brady Borgestad picked up a loose puck in the corner and fired a low shot from the right circle to give White Bear Lake a 3-2 overtime win over Stillwater at the TCO Sports Garden.

The Bears (16-5-0) needed overtime to secure the win after Stillwater's Ty Tuccitto scored with 7 seconds left in regulation to tie the game.

White Bear Lake opened a 2-0 lead following goals by Grady Gallatin and Jack Stanius.

Stillwater (13-7-3) cut the lead to 2-1 when Daniel Roeske scored in the second.

Lake of the Woods 4, Breckenridge/Wahpeton 3

WAHPETON, N.D. - Lake of the Woods scored three goals in the third period's first 2:46 to rally past Breckenridge/Wahpeton 4-3 at Stern Sports Arena.

Lake of the Woods (5-17-0) started its scoring run with Charlie Eck's goal 44 seconds into the final period. Jordan Kvernen scored 46 seconds later to tie the game before Gregory Peters recorded the game-winning goal on the power play with 14:14 to play.

Breckenridge/Wahpeton (1-21-0) led 3-1 after two periods following second-period goals by Jack Rittenour and Josiah Breuer.

Kittson Central 7, Park Rapids 2

HALLOCK - Tyler Hennen moved into fourth place on the state's all-time scoring list with a six-point effort as Kittson Central defeated Park Rapids 7-2 at the Hallock Ice Arena.

Hennen scored two goals and had four assists to give him 116 points this season and 315 in his career. He passed Duluth East's Dave Spehar (1992-96) who had 311 points Saturday and trails Luverne's Chaz Smedsrud (2012-16), who scored 357 to rank third.

The Bearcats led 3-2 after two periods. Elijah Swanson extended the lead to 4-2 before Hayden Olsonawski scored back-to-back shorthanded goals to make 6-2 with 9:24 to play. Hennen assisted on each goal before netting one himself with 6:39 remaining.

Olsonawski, also one of the state's leading scorers, finished with three goals and two assists.

Kale Ravnaas scored both goals for Park Rapids (12-10-1).

Coon Rapids 8, Robbinsdale Armstrong/Cooper 8 (OT)

NEW HOPE - Coon Rapids and Robbinsdale/Armstrong combined for 16 regulation goals but couldn't muster one more in the 8-minute overtime period as the teams skated to an 8-8 tie at New Hope Ice Arena.

The game was the third this season to end in an 8-8 tie, following the template set by Holy Angels and Cloquet/Esko/Carlton on Jan. 20 and repeated on Jan. 27 by Kittson Central and Wadena-Deer Creek.

Coon Rapids (10-12-2) and Robbinsdale Armstrong/Cooper (10-12-1) combined for six goals in the second period and seven in the third, including three in the closing 2:07 of regulation.

Coon Rapids' Cayden Alpin scored with 1:05 left in regulation to complete his hat trick and force the overtime period.
