Hockey Night: Spuds take bite out of Rogers

Feb. 7: Reierson, Weigel shine as Moorhead registers upset; Duluth East rallies to beat Champlin Park; Warroad's Marvin-Cordes KOs East Grand Forks again

Moorhead 4, Rogers 1

MOORHEAD - Aaron Reierson's hat trick and Kai Weigel's 22 saves led Moorhead to a 4-1 upset win over Rogers on Tuesday at the Moorhead Sports Center.

Reierson's goals all came in the second period for No. 16-2A Moorhead (12-9-0). His first goal gave the Spuds a 1-0 lead with 1:55 gone in the period.

Carson Udee tied the game 32 seconds later for No. 4-2A Rogers (14-4-3).

Moorhead took the lead back 32 seconds later with Ian Ness scoring at 2:59. Reierson's second goal came with 9:19 left in the period and he completed his hat trick with 24 seconds remaining in the second.

The Spuds have won three-straight games and four of their last five.

Duluth East 6, Champlin Park 5 (OT)

DULUTH - Cole Christian scored 41 seconds into overtime to lift Duluth East past Champlin Park 6-5 at Heritage Sports Center, overshadowing a dominant night by the Rebels' Evan Williams.

Grant Winkler scored with 1:41 left in regulation to allow No. 13-2A Duluth East (16-6-1) to get to the extra period.

Evan Williams scored all five goals for No. 15-2A Champlin Park (14-8-0). His fifth goal came with 3:39 remaining and put the Rebels ahead 5-4.

The victory stretched Duluth East's winning streak to eight games.

Warroad 3, East Grand Forks 2

WARROAD - Junior forward Murray Marvin-Cordes scored the winning goal for the second consecutive night as Warroad swept its two-day, home-and-home series against East Grand Forks by beating the Green Wave 3-2 at the Gardens Arena.

Marvin-Cordes, who had a hat trick on Monday night, scored 2:50 into the third period to put No. 1-1A Warroad (23-0-0) ahead 3-1.

No. 5-1A East Grand Forks (12-10-0) cut the lead to 3-2 with 10:10 remaining on a shorthanded goal by Brock Schultz.

Warroad goaltender Hampton Slukynsky stopped 33 shots.

Stillwater 4, St. Thomas Academy 1

STILLWATER - Stillwater scored four times in the second period as the Ponies upset St. Thomas Academy 4-1 at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center.

Stillwater (12-6-3) rallied from a 1-0 deficit after the first period by scoring four goals in the second period's final 8:21.

The Ponies tied the game on Blaine Batchelor's goal with 8:21 left in the second. They took the lead on Ty Tuccitto's goal with 4:36 left. Ethan Bernier and Ben Peterson scored 38 seconds apart in the period's final 86 seconds.

No. 7-2A  St. Thomas Academy (16-6-0) took the lead in the first on Will Dosan's goal.

Providence Academy 5, Delano 4

DELANO - Sammy Lewis and John Hendrickson each scored twice as Providence Academy held on to defeat the rallying Tigers 5-4 at Delano Area Sports Arena.

Hendrickson scored his goals in the first as No. 15-1A Providence Academy (13-9-0) took a 2-0 lead. Delano's Nick Truax scored make it 2-1 after the first.

Lewis scored the first of his power-play goals with 8:10 left in the second to give Providence Academy a 4-2 lead. He scored again 1:57 into the third to make it 5-2 but No. 8-1A Delano (12-10-0) used goals by Aaron Halonen and Will Brown 39 seconds apart to make it 5-4 with 10:40 remaining.

Wehmann also had three assists.

Northern Lakes 5, Hibbing/Chisholm 4 (OT)

BREEZY POINT - Isaac Peterson scored with 4:12 remaining in overtime to give Northern Lakes a 5-4 upset win over No. 7-1A Hibbing/Chisholm at Breezy Point Ice Arena.

Hibbing/Chisholm (15-7-1) rallied from a 4-2 second-period deficit on goals in the closing minutes of the period from Blaydon Kubena-McCue and Nathan Rude.

Northern Lakes (7-13-0) led 2-0 after 2:57 as the first period as Jerome Martin and Finnegan Fogarty scored.

The Bluejackets answered with first-period goals from Andrew Lehman and Nathan Rude.

Similar to the first, Northern Lakes scored early in the second. Darby Boelter scored 29 seconds into the period and Fogarty scored with 10:31 left.

The loss snaps a three-game win streak for Hibbing/Chisholm.

Rosemount 4, Eastview 3

ROSEMOUNT - Jake Toll scored two power-play goals in the third period to give Rosemount a 4-3 come-from-behind win over No. 17-2A Eastview at Rosemount Ice Arena.

Toll's first goal with the man advantage came with 6:18 to play. His scored his game-winner with 2:42 remaining.

Rosemount (10-9-1) led 2-0 after goals by Owen Durigan and Caden Campbell. Eastview (13-8-0) cut the lead to 2-1 on Jordan Brothers' first-period goal.

The Lightning tied it at 2-2 on Charlie Ortman's power-play goal 2:25 into the third and took a 3-2 lead with Billy Downs scoring with 10:11 remaining.

The teams, both of which play out of Section 3AA, combined for 14 penalties.

International Falls 4, Fort Frances (Ontario) 2

INTERNATIONAL FALLS - Julius Maish's second-period goal held up as the game winner as International Falls defeated border rival Fort Frances (Ontario) 4-2 at Bronco Arena to claim the Walleye Cup.

International Falls (8-13-0) led 1-0 after one and took a 3-1 lead after Maish's goal with 11:08 left in the second.

Fort Frances cut the lead to 3-2 but Noah Shikowsky scored on a power play 71 seconds into the third for an insurance goal.
