Hockey Night: Delano gains edge on Minneapolis

Feb. 4: Tigers win rematch of last season's Section 2A title game; Northfield's Walock, Warroad's Slukynsky nearing career shutout mark

Delano 3, Minneapolis 2

DELANO - Delano scored the first three goals then hung on to beat Minneapolis 3-2 on Saturday in a meeting of top-20 Class 1A teams at the Delano Area Sports Arena.

The teams last met in last year's Section 2A title game, which Minneapolis won 3-1, and Saturday's result will no doubt have an impact on this year's section seeding order.

Cody Kelker brought No. 17-1A Minneapolis (11-7-2) to within 3-2 with 12:23 to play but Minneapolis was unable to get another shot past Drew Dorsey, who finished with 26 saves.

Cooper Nielsen gave No. 8-1A Delano (12-9-0) the lead 1:43 into the opening period. Will Brown then made it 2-0 with 7:57 left in the first.

Teague Collings gave Delano a 3-0 lead, then Minneapolis got on the board when Joel Hanson scored with 2:40 remaining in the second.

Cretin-Derham Hall 3, White Bear Lake 2

VADNAIS HEIGHTS - Jake Fisher's power-play goal with 5:07 left in the third period gave Cretin-Derham Hall a 3-2 win over White Bear Lake at the TCO Sports Garden.

The win keeps the No. 10-2A Raiders (15-7-1) unbeaten in Suburban East Conference play at 7-0-1. White Bear Lake drops to 7-2-0 in the conference.

White Bear Lake's Nolan Roed scored a shorthanded goal to tie it with 6:34 to play.

No. 11-2A White Bear Lake (14-5-0) scored the opening goal in the first period as Aiden Welch gave the Bears a 1-0 lead.

The Raiders' Max Anderson tied the game 3:37 into the second and Fisher scored a shorthanded goal to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead after two periods.

In addition to his two goals, which push his season total to 24, Fisher had an assist. Anderson added two assists to go with his goal.

Minnetonka 6, Buffalo 0

MINNETONKA - Sam Scheetz and Gavin Garry each had a goal and two assists as Minnetonka beat Buffalo 6-0 at the Pagel Activity Center, dashing Buffalo's hopes for a third straight upset win. 

Scheetz and Luke Garry scored in the first for No. 1-1A Minnetonka (19-2-0), which paired that offense with a defense that limited the Bison to only one shot on goal.

Alex Lunski added two goals for the Skippers. Kaizer Nelson stopped all eight shots he faced while the Skippers fired 41 shots at Buffalo standout Max Varner.

Warroad 4, Grand Forks Central (N.D.) 0

WARROAD - Senior goaltender Hampton Slukynsky recorded his seventh shutout of the season as Warroad remained unbeaten with a 4-0 win over Grand Forks Central (N.D.) at the Gardens Arena.

Junior forward Carson Pilgrim led Warroad (21-0-0) with two goals and two assists as he recorded his 100th career point in the win.

Grand Forks Central (12-8-0) was ranked No. 4 in North Dakota in latest state coaches poll.

The shutout was Slukynsky's 18th of his career.

Jayson Shaugabay added a goal and two assists as he moved into ninth on the state's all-time scoring list with 279 career points. He entered the game tied with Ben Meyers of Delano (2013-17). Shaugabay needs three points to move into eighth place and a tie with Gino Guyer of Greenway (1998-2002).

The Warriors scored three goals in 5 minutes midway through the first period to take a commanding lead.

Lakeville South 6, Shakopee 4

SHAKOPEE - Lakeville South led by three goals after the first period but needed two goals in the final 46 seconds, including the winner from Colton Kunkel, to beat Shakopee 6-4 in a matchup of top-20 Class 2A teams at Shakopee Ice Arena.

Shakopee senior Jackson Vogel's goal with 1:27 to play tied the score at 4-4.

No. 12-2A Lakeville South (14-5-1) led 3-0 after the first period on goals from Ryder Patterson, Tate Pritchard and Aidan Willis. 

No. 20-2A Shakopee (13-6-0) cut the lead to 4-2 after the second period as Jackson Vogel and Nate Pederson scored for the Sabers. Their goals sandwiched a shorthanded tally by Ashton Dahms.

Pritchard added empty-net goal with five seconds remaining.

Tyler Lafferty had three assists for the Cougars while Cooper Simpson had a goal and two assists for Shakopee.

Northfield 5, Owatonna 0

OWATONNA - Keaton Walock stopped 12 shots for his 19th career shutout and Kamden Kaiser scored three goals - all on power plays - to lead Northfield past Owatonna 5-0 at the Four Seasons Centre.

The shutout was the fourth this season for Walock, a senior in his third season as the Raiders' starter.

Nick Althaus of St. Cloud Apollo is believed to hold the state career shutout record with 24. Ben Dardis of Mahtomedi finished his high school career last season with 20.

St. Paul Academy 3, La Crescent-Hokah 1

ST. PAUL - Will Black's hat trick powered St. Paul Academy to a 3-1 win over La Crescent-Hokah at Drake Arena.

Black's first goal came in the second period for St. Paul Academy (9-10-1). He made it 2-0 with 5:01 left in the third.

With 4:17 to play, Cody Hogan scored for La Crescent-Hokah (16-5-0) but Black completed the scoring with one second left with an insurance goal into an empty net.

The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Lancers.

Eden Prairie 2, Benilde-St. Margaret's 0

ST. LOUIS PARK - Isaiah Paulnock made 20 saves to record his third shutout of the season as Eden Prairie blanked Benilde-St. Margaret's 2-0 at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.

Eden Prairie (10-10-1) took a 1-0 lead on Teddy Townsend's second-period goal. Cole Saterdalen scored an empty-net goal with 1:02 remaining in the third.

Mason McElroy stopped 23 shots for No. 5-2A Benilde-St. Margaret's (14-6-0), which had a four-game win streak snapped. The Red Knights had won 10 of their prevoius 11 games.

Kittson Central 8, International Falls 3

HALLOCK - Tyler Hennen surpassed the 100-point mark for the season and 300-point mark for his career as Kittson Country Central defeated International Falls 8-3 at the Hallock Ice Arena.

Hennen scored five goals and added two assists to give him 105 points (62 goals, 43 assists) for the season and 304 for his career. He needs seven points to tie Duluth East's Dave Spehar (1992-96) for fourth on the state's all-time scoring list.

International Falls (7-13-0) took a 1-0 lead on Max Dremmel's goal 3 minutes into the first. Hennen scored his first goal nearly three minutes later. Hayden Olsonawski, also one of the state's scoring leaders this season, gave the Bearcats a 2-1 lead and then Hennen's goal with five seconds left in the first made it 3-1.

The Broncos cut the lead to 5-3 just over two minutes into the third but Hennen scored back-to-back shorthanded goals to lead Kittson Country Central (12-8-1) to its fifth win in its last six games.

Hennen finished with three shorthanded goals. Olsonawski had three goals and an assist. He's tied for fourth in the state with 36 goals and tied for fifth with 69 points.
