Hockey Night: Andover overpowers Grand Rapids

Feb. 3: Gavyn Thoreson's four points lead Huskies past Thunderhawks; Edina wins Round 1 against Hill-Murray; Unbeaten Warroad gets 20th win

Andover 4, Grand Rapids 1

ANDOVER - Gavyn Thoreson scored twice and had two assists as Andover beat Section 7AA rival Grand Rapids 4-1 at the Andover Community Center.

Thoreson scored on a power play 2:09 into the second period to give No. 8-2A Andover (16-5-1) a 1-0 lead. The Huskies' Cayden Casey and Grand Rapids' Jacob Garski traded goals in the period's final three minutes and Andover led 2-1 after 34 minutes.

Thoreson, a senior St. Cloyd State commit,  added his second goal midway in the third to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead.

Casey was also credited with two assists.

Myles Gunderson made 34 saves for Grand Rapids (11-9-1).

Edina 2, Hill-Murray 1

MAPLEWOOD - University of Minnesota commit Jackson Nevers scored the game-winning goal with 3 minutes left in regulation to give Edina a 2-1 win over Hill-Murray in a matchup of top-20 Class 2A teams at Aldrich Arena.

Friday's game was the first of a two-day, home-and-home series.

No. 3-2A Edina (14-4-1) struck first with Caden Morgan scoring in the first. No. 18-2A Hill-Murray (10-9-1) answered in the second with Jackson Reeves' goal.

Robbie Clarkowski made 23 saves for the Hornets while Jack Erickson stopped 26 shots for Hill-Murray.

Brainerd 4, Rock Ridge 3

BRAINERD - Kade Stengrim scored with 52 seconds remaining to give Brainerd a 4-3 comeback win over Rock Ridge at the Essential Health Sports Center.

No. 10-1A Rock Ridge (12-6-1) opened a 2-0 lead in the first and left 3-2 after two periods. Kasey Lamppa and Isaac Flatley scored in the first for the Wolverines and Lamppa added a power-play goal in the second.

Brainerd (7-11-2) used a power-play goal by Chad King to tie the contest 4:18 into the second.

Stengrim, who also had two assists, tied the game 3:17 into the third before scoring his game-winning goal nearly 13 minutes later.

Ryan Gerlich stopped 36 shots for the Warriors.

Warroad 5, Thief River Falls 0

WARROAD - Murray Marvin-Cordes, Carson Pilgrim and Jayson Shaugabay combined for 10 points and Hampton Slukynsky recorded his sixth shutout of the season as Warroad remained the state's lone unbeaten team by defeating Thief River Falls 5-0 at The Gardens Arena.

Marvin-Cordes had four assists for No. 1-1A Warroad (20-0-0) as Pilgrim scored twice to go with an assist and Shaugabay added a goal and two assists.

The shutout was the 17th of Slukynsky's  career. He had nine last season. The state career record for shutouts is believed to be 20 set last season by Ben Dardis, a four-year starter at Mahtomedi.

Conor Roff stopped 37 shots for No. 16-1A Thief River Falls (9-10-1).

Hopkins 4, Dodge County 3 (OT)

HOPKINS - Leo Carter's goal 64 seconds into overtime gave Hopkins a 4-3 victory over Dodge County at the Hopkins Pavillion Ice Arena.

The teams traded goals throughout, and Dylan Klomps' goal with 27 seconds left in the third for Dodge County (10-9-0) forced the extra session.

Malaki Berry had a goal and three assists and Weston Schenkelberg two goals for Hopkins (5-14-0). The Royals outshot Dodge County 50-27.

Ely 6, St. Paul Johnson 3

ELY - Deegan Richards scored an empty net goal with 10 seconds remaining to complete his hat trick as Ely beat St. Paul Johnson 6-3 at the Ely Ice Arena.

Richards also scored with 7:13 remaining in the third to give the Timberwolves (7-14-0) a 5-3 lead. Richards, a junior forward, leads Ely with 37 points.

Alex Themmes pulled St. Paul Johnson (2-16-0) to within 4-3 by scoring with 28 seconds left in the second period.

Hutchinson 3, Breck 1

GOLDEN VALLEY - Third-period goals by Toren Miller and Emmett Reiter boosted Hutchinson to a 3-1 victory over Breck at  Anderson Ice Arena.

Hutchinson's Manny Pearce and Breck's Nate Miller traded first-period goals, and the score remained 1-1 until the Tigers' Miller scored with 6:25 remaining.

Hunter Lien made 19 saves for Hutchinson (8-11-0). Drew Black had 20 stops for Breck (7-13-1).
