Hockey Night: Chaska stuns second-straight top-20 opponent

Jan. 31: Unranked Hawks outlast No. 16 Eastview; Duluth East races past Centennial; Tyler Hennen has another six-goal night

Chaska 4, Eastview 3

CHASKA - Blake Markwell's power-play goal with 2:05 left in the second period completed the scoring and held up as the winner on Tuesday as Chaska upended Eastview 4-3 at the Chaska Community Center for its second major upset victory in as many games.

Markwell blasted a shot from the high slot that sailed through traffic and into the upper left corner of the net, beating screened Eastview goaltender Jay Svaren.

Billy Downs scored for No. 16-2A Eastview (12-7-0) with 2:59 left in the second to tie it at 3-3, only to have Markwell score 54 seconds later.

Ty Broten and Markwell each had a goal and an assist for Chaska (6-13-1), which defeated Cretin-Derham Hall, a top-10 Class 2A team, 3-2 on Saturday.

Zach Wooten had two goals for Eastview.

Duluth East 7, Centennial 4

CENTENNIAL - Duluth East scored five goals in the third period, including two from senior forward Cole Christian, as it defeated Centennial 7-4 in a matchup of top-20 Class 2A teams at the Heritage Sports Center.

No. 15-2A Duluth East (13-6-1) and No. 14-2A Centennial (10-7-1) entered the third period tied 2-2 then combined for seven goals.

Christian finished with a hat trick and an assist to lead Duluth East while Harper Searles, Austin Petersen and Brock Carls each added an assist to go with their goals for Centennial.

The teams combined for three goals in a span of 1:32 early in the third period and had another three-goal flurry, this time in 3:43 late in regulation.

Wyatt Peterson's goal with 5:04 remaining put the Greyhounds ahead 5-3 and proved to be the winner.

Kittson County Central 9, Lake of the Woods 5

BAUDETTE - Tyler Hennen continued his attack on the state's scoring list by recording six goals and two assists as Kittson County Central defeated Lake of the Woods 9-5 at Lake of the Woods Community Arena.

Hennen, who started his varsity career as an eighth grader, now has 292 career points, placing him fifth on the state's all-time scoring list. He passed Luverne's Jaxon Nelson (290 points, 2013-2016) Tuesday. Next on the state list is Duluth East's Dave Spehar (1992-96) with 311 points.

Hennen also recorded six goals in his last outing, an 8-8 tie with Wadena-Deer Creek Jan. 27. Hennen's eight points push his total to a state-best 93 this season. He is also the state leader in goals with 53.

After scoring a goal in the first, Hennen scored four times in the second as Kittson County Central (10-8-1) led 7-3 after two periods.

Hayden Olsonawski added three goals and four assists for the Bearcats.

Charlie Eck scored four goals for Lake of the Woods (4-14-0).

Alexandria 3, Little Falls 2 (OT)

LITTLE FALLS - Leo Kompelien scored 2:40 into overtime to give Alexandria a 3-2 win over Little Falls at Exchange Arena.

The teams traded goals in the first and seconds periods. No. 15-1A Little Falls (11-8-1) got on the scoreboard first with a goal by Joey Welinski. Alexandria (8-10-1) countered with Jack Lamski's goal.

In the second, Nick Peterson scored on the power play for Alexandria but Carter Oothoudt answered with a power-play goal for the Flyers.

Mankato East 5, Mankato West 1

MANKATO - Zachary Lebens scored twice as Mankato East/Loyola defeated Mankato West 5-2 at All Seasons Arena.

Mankato East/Loyola (7-11-0) scored twice in the first and twice in the second for a 4-0 lead before Parker Wittenberg scored for Mankato West (6-10-2) with 5:36 left in the second.

Lebens, Shae Gavin and Andrew Bastian each recorded three points for the Cougars.

Moorhead 4, East Grand Forks 3

EAST GRAND FORKS - Aaron Reierson's shorthanded goal with 3:20 remaining lifted Moorhead to a 4-3 win over East Grand Forks at the East Grand Forks Civic Arena.

No. 17-2A Moorhead (10-9-0) led 3-1 after two periods as it scored all three of its goals in the middle period. 

No. 5-1A East Grand Forks (12-7-0) answered with two goals in the third period's first six minutes to tie the game and set the stage for Reierson's game winner.

Kai Weigel stopped 35 shots for the Spuds.

Cretin-Derham Hall 8, Blake 3

HOPKINS - Cretin-Derham Hall erupted for five goals in the third period as the Raiders defeated Blake 8-3 at Blake Ice Arena.

No. 10-2A Cretin-Derham Hall (14-6-1) led 3-0 in the first but Rowan Heithoff scored twice in the second for Blake (11-8-1) to rally the Bears.

Max Anderson scored 80 seconds into the third to give the Raiders a 4-2 lead. Holden Saumweber made it 5-2 before goals by Attila Lippai and Jake Fisher pushed the Raiders' lead to 7-2.

Lippai had two goals for Cretin-Derham Hall while Trey Gnetz and Fisher each had a goal and two assists. Simon Houge led the Raiders with three assists.
