Hockey Night: Unranked Buffalo slays another top-10 giant

Jan. 30: Bison stun No. 6 Rogers in overtime two days after beating then-No. 2 Wayzata

Buffalo 4, Rogers 3 (OT)

ROGERS - Eli Tiernan's goal 1:45 into overtime secured a second major upset victory in three days for Buffalo, which topped Rogers 4-3 at Rogers Ice Arena on Monday in one of nine games played around the state.

The Bison (10-7-2) beat then-No. 2-2A Wayzata 1-0 on Saturday behind a 44-save performance from junior goaltender Max Varner. Varner was sharp again Monday, stopping 37 of 40 shots.

Tiernan, who also scored with 15 seconds left in the second period, took a perfect feed through the crease from Lex Preugschas and one-timed the puck into an open net for the winner. The play started with a Rogers turnover in the natural zone.

The goals were the fourth and fifth of the season for Tiernan, a junior forward.

No. 6-2A Rogers (12-3-3) tied it 3-3 early in the third period on a power-play goal by Sam Ranallo. Chase Cheslock added a goal and an assist for the Royals.

Hill-Murray 2, Mahtomedi 1

MAPLEWOOD - Riley Zupfer scored with 4.2 seconds left in overtime as Hill-Murray secured its second dramatic win in three days by beating Mahtomedi 2-1 at Aldrich Arena.

The goal was the fourth of the season for Zupfer, an eighth-grade forward. 

No. 18-2A Hill-Murray (9-8-1) was coming off Saturday's 3-2 Hockey Day Minnesota overtime victory over arch rival White Bear Lake.

Caden Sampair put the Pioneers ahead 1-0 in the first with a shorthanded goal, as he scored on a 1-on-2 rush.

Defenseman Cav Brunner answered for No. 3-1A Mahtomedi (11-7-0) with a shorthanded breakaway goal 28 seconds into the third period.

Charlie Brandt made 25 saves for Mahtomedi. Jack Erickson stopped 31 shots for the Pioneers.

La Crescent-Hokah 7, Black River Falls (Wis.) 1

LA CRESCENT - Wyatt Farrell scored twice and added two assists as La Crescent-Hokah rolled past Black River Falls (Wis.) 7-1 at La Crescent Community Arena.

Farrell opened the scoring 14 seconds into the first period and scored again early in the third to put the Lancers (15-4-0) ahead 6-1. Farrell, a junior forward, has 44 goals to rank second in the state behind Kittson Central senior Tyler Hennen's 47.

Evan Lowe scored in the second period for Black River Falls (11-5-0).

The Lancers have won eight of their last nine games.

Crookston 2, Park Rapids 2 (OT)

PARK RAPIDS - A diving Jack Doda scored a rebound goal during a goalmouth scramble with 26.8 seconds left in regulation for Crookston as the Pirates and Park Rapids skated to a 2-2 overtime tie at at Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

Park Rapids (11-5-1), which extended its unbeaten streak to eight games, got a first-period goal from Cooper Brovold and one in the third from Joey Hillukka to take a 2-1 lead.

Thor Harbott scored in the second period for Crookston (2-15-1) to tie it at 1-1.

Winona 4, Onalaska/La Crosse (Wis.) 2

WINONA - Teis Larsen completed his hat trick with an empty net goal with 1:32 remaining as Winona beat Onalaska/La Crosse (Wis.) 5-2 at Bud King Ice Arena.

Larsen, a junior forward, scored on a power play in the first period to put Winona (5-9-2) ahead 2-0. He also scored midway through the third period to give Winona a 4-2 lead. Larsen leads the Winhawks with 22 goals.

Colin Comeau's goal late in the second period puled Onalaska/La Crosse (9-10-2) to within 3-2 heading into the third.
