Hockey Night: Warroad proves it's No. 1, and then some

Jan. 20: Warriors shut out state's top Class 2A team in Wayzata; Hermantown rallies past Moorhead

Warroad 3, Wayzata 0

WARROAD - Junior forward Carson Pilgrim scored twice an added an assist and Hampton Slukynsky stopped 30 shots as Warroad defeated Wayzata on Friday in a matchup of the state's top-ranked teams in each class at The Gardens Arena.

Pilgrim scored in the second period as No. 1-1A Warroad (15-0-0) took a 2-0 lead . He added an empty netter with 42 seconds remaining.

Slukynsky recorded his fifth shutout this season, second most in the state. 

Jayson Shaugabay scored on the power play to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the first period.

Will Ingemann stopped 25 shots for No. 1-2A Wayzata (13-1-1).

Holy Angels 8, Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 8 (OT)

CLOQUET - Cloquet/Esko/Carlton's Lucas Rauner scored with 1.3 seconds left in regulation to force overtime as the Lumberjacks and Holy Angels skated to an 8-8 tie at the Cloquet Area Recreation Center.

The teams combined to score seven goals in the third period, including four in the final 3:27. The teams traded goals in the final 2:17.

Rauner, a senior defenseman, grabbed a loose puck near the right face-off dot and fired a high shot over a diving Holy Angels defender and the left shoulder of Stars goaltender Rob Ciresi.

Henry Lechner led Holy Angels (9-4-1) with four goals and an assist. Jack Bartfield added a goal and two assists.

Bobby Thornton and Cole Painovich each scored two goals for Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (8-6-1). Rauner had two assists to go with his game-tying goal.

Hermantown 3, Moorhead 2

HERMANTOWN - Will Esterbrooks scored with 10.3 seconds to play as Hermantown defeated Moorhead 3-2 at Hermantown Ice Arena.

Esterbrooks took a drop pass from Matt Kauppinen at the top of the right face-off circle and, from near the boards at the right hash marks, unloaded a rising shot that beat screened Moorhead goaltender Kai Weigel. 

Moorhead led 2-1 after two periods as goals by Joe Kortan and Aaron Reierson sandwiched a goal by Hermantown's Dallas Vieau.

Mason Sundbom tied the game for No. 2-1A Hermantown (12-1-1) with 6:59 remaining, setting the stage for Esterbrooks' game-winning goal. The goal was the third of the season for Esterbrooks, a junior defenseman.

Kai Weigel made 30 saves for No. 20-2A Moorhead (8-8-0) as did Hermantown's Dane Callaway.

White Bear Lake 3, Grand Rapids 0

VADNAIS HEIGHTS - Leo Gabriel made 26 saves to record his second shutout of the season as White Bear Lake defeated Grand Rapids 3-0 in a matchup of top-20 Class 2A teams at TCO Sports Garden.

The win was Gabriel's 10th of the season for No. 10-2A White Bear Lake (13-2-0). Grady Gallatin recorded a goal and an assist for the Bears. Aiden Wlech and Nolan Roed also scored.

Myles Gunderson stopped 23 shots for No. 19-2A Grand Rapids (11-6-0).

Little Falls 3, Thief River Falls 2 (OT)

THIEF RIVER FALLS - Freshman forward Remi Chisholm scored with 1:46 left in overtime as Little Falls beat Thief River Falls 3-2 at Huck Olson Memorial Civic Center.

Chisholm also scored in the second period for No. 18-1A Little Falls (8-7-1). The goals were Chisholm's second and third of the season.

Carter Oothoudt also scored for the Flyers, who rallied from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits. 

Tysen Loeffler and Jace Erickson scored for No. 15-1A Thief River Falls (8-9-1).

Park Rapids 6, Bagley/Fosston 5 (OT)

PARK RAPIDS - Josh Hillukka scored 2:01 into overtime to lift Park Rapids to a 6-5 win over Bagley/Fosston at Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

Quinten Friborg scored with 12 seconds left in regulation as Bagley/Fosston (11-6-0) rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period to force the extra session. Isaac Schermerhorn also scored in the third for the Flyers.

Hillukka, a senior forward, also had two assists. He leads the Panthers with 13 goals and 24 points.

Markus Olson had a goal and three assists for Bagley/Fosston.
