Hockey Night: Champlin Park stuns Maple Grove in OT

Jan. 19: Trevor Aberwald's goal with 28 seconds left gives Rebels the upset win; Shakopee holds off Gentry Academy

Champlin Park 2, Maple Grove 1 (OT)

CHAMPLIN - Trevor Aberwald scored with 28 seconds left in overtime to give Champlin Park a stunning 2-1 win over Maple Grove on Thursday at the Champlin Ice Forum.

Champlin Park's victory snapped an 11-game unbeaten streak for the Crimson.

Aberwald took a feed through the crease from Jordan Ronn and whipped the puck into an open net, touching of a wild celebration for the Rebels as they streamed off the bench and toward their jubilant student section.

After a scoreless first, No. 3-2A Maple Grove (12-3-1) took the lead on Jack Kernan's goal with 6:42 remaining in the second.

No. 16-2A Champlin Park (11-5-0) evened the score when Ronn scored 3:50 into the third.

Aberwald also had an assist while Evan Williams had two assists for the Rebels.

Coen Neu made 25 saves for Champlin Park, coming off an 8-2 loss to Benilde-St. Margaret's on Wednesday.

Shakopee 4, Gentry Academy 2

SHAKOPEE - Jackson Vogel scored two of his three goals in the third period to lead Shakopee to a 4-2 win over Gentry Academy at Shakopee Ice Arena.

Vogel, a senior forward, has now scored 14 goals to go with 14 assists for a team-high 28 points this season for No. 15-2A Shakopee (10-4-0).

Vogel and teammate Cooper Simpson scored in the first period. For Simpson, it was his team-high 19th goal.

Easton Rooney and Ryder Betzold each scored in the second period for Gentry Academy (10-6-0).

Vogel scored on the power play with 1:49 to play before adding empty-net goal one minute later to clinch the win for the Sabers.

Orono 4, St. Cloud Cathedral 3

LONG LAKE - Orono's four-goal second period was just enough as the Spartans defeated St. Cloud Cathedral 4-3 in a matchup top-20 Class 1A teams at Orono Ice Arena.

No. 4-1A Orono (13-2-0) got two goals from Bradley Walker and one each from Brooks Fevers and Connor Lang in the second to take a 4-1 lead.

The Crusaders' comeback attempt started with Griffin Sturm's power-play with 2:31 to play. Cole Hwang added another power-play goal with 36 seconds left but the Crusaders were unable to get another shot past Brock Peyton, who made 29 saves for Orono.

No. 20-1A St. Cloud Cathedral (8-7-0) led 1-0 after the first on Landon Swenson's goal.

Sartell-St. Stephen 5, Fergus Falls 1

FERGUS FALLS - Kyan Rieder scored twice to lead Sartell-St. Stephan to a 5-2 win over Fergus Falls at the Fergus Falls Community Arena.

Sartell-St. Stephen, which improved to 10-3-1, took a 2-1 lead on Rieder's first goal with 5:37 left in the first period. Rieder scored with 5:37 left in the second to give the Sabres a 3-1 lead.

Joey Johnson scored in the first period for No. 8-1A Fergus Falls (8-4-1).

Baylor Stebbins had a goal and two assists for Sartell-St. Stephen. Sterling McCabe added a goal and an assist.

Roseville 3, Park of Cottage Grove 1

ROSEVILLE - Daniel Tschida and Luke Steffen scored in the third period to propel Roseville to a 3-1 win over Park of Cottage Grove at Roseville Ice Arena.

Steffen gave Roseville (10-5-1) a 1-0 lead in the first period. Maccoy Wohnoutka evened the score for Park of Cottage Grove (11-6-0) in the second.

Tschida's goal midway through the third gave the Raiders a 2-1 lead. Steffen's second goal of the game came with 21 seconds remaining.

Dylan Keeley made 28 saves for Roseville.

East Ridge 3, Mounds View 2 (OT)

COTTAGE GROVE - Jack Tauscher's shorthanded goal with 1:25 left in overtime lifted East Ridge to a 3-2 victory over Mounds View in a Suburban East Conference matchup at Cottage Grove Ice Arena.

Jack Loucks scored for Mounds View (5-8-1) with 1:31 left in regulation to force the extra period.

Tauscher also assisted on goals by Blake Kohnen and Grant Kohnen. 

Goaltender Jack Hodgins made 39 saves for East Ridge (8-6-0).

Bagley/Fosston 4, Crookston 3 (OT)

BAGLEY - Senior forward Breckin Levin completed his hat trick with a goal 2:24 into overtime as Bagley/Fosston rallied from a two-goal second-period deficit to beat Crookston 4-3 at Bagley Youth Hockey Arena.

Levin scored with 4:43 remaining in regulation, forcing the overtime session. His three goals give him 25 this season, tied for fifth most in the state.
