Hockey Night: John Marshall stuns Mayo in Rochester rivalry

Jan. 14: Rockets beat Spartans for first time in more than five years; Minnetonka halts Duluth East's unbeaten streak

Rochester John Marshall 5, Rochester Mayo 3

ROCHESTER - Defensemen Jayden Veney and Mason Decker each scored twice as Rochester John Marshall defeated Rochester Mayo 5-3 on Saturday at Graham Arena.

The win was the Rockets' first over Mayo in more than five seasons and snapped the Spartans' nine-game win streak.

Cody Vlasaty made 38 saves for the John Marshall (6-8-1).

Mayo (9-3-1) led 2-1 after two periods on goals by Gavin Black and Matthew Siems.

Veney, a junior, scored a shorthanded goal 63 seconds into the third period. Mayo took the lead on the power play 36 seconds later, but the Rockets' Peyton Eckhoff tied the game with 2:16 to play.

Veney added a power-play goal with 1:54 remaining and Decker, a senior, scored with 30 seconds left.

Minnetonka 4, Duluth East 1

MINNETONKA - Four players scored for Minnetonka as it defeated Duluth East 4-1 at the Pagel Activity Center, snapping the Greyhounds' six-game unbeaten streak.

No. 19-2A Duluth East (8-6-1) got on the scoreboard first with Makoto Sudoh's goal with 9:19 remaining in the opening period. The Skippers answered with Gavin Garry's goal 42 seconds later.

No. 2-2A Minnetonka (12-2-0) took the lead on John Stout's power-play goal with 9:40 left in the second period. The Skippers added insurance goals in the third by Luke Garry and Ashton Schultz.

Grand Rapids 2, Moorhead 1

MOORHEAD - Jacob Garski's goal midway through the third period proved to be the game winner as Grand Rapids defeated Moorhead 2-1 at Cullen Hockey Center.

No. 16-2A Moorhead (7-7-0) took a 1-0 lead with Aaron Reierson's power-play goal with 1:03 left in the first period.

Kyle Henke evened things for Grand Rapids (10-5-0) when he scored 4:18 into the second.

Myles Gunderson stopped 18 shots for the Thunderhawks while Kai Weigel made 25 saves for Moorhead.

White Bear Lake 7, Park of Cottage Grove 0

COTTAGE GROVE - Aiden Welch had a hat trick and Leo Gabriel made 24 saves as White Bear Lake won its seventh straight game by defeating Park of Cottage Grove 7-0 at Cottage Grove Ice Arena.

No. 15 White Bear Lake (11-2-0) also got goals from Nolan Roed, Brady Borgestad, Charlie Olsen and Jack Stanius. Roed added three assists to give him a team-leading 29 points.

Alex Harden made 26 saves for Park of Cottage Grove (11-5-0).

Breck 4, St. Cloud 3

ST. CLOUD - Ben Amato's goal with 6:58 remaining held up as the game winner as Breck scored three times in the third period to rally and defeat St. Cloud 4-3 at Municipal Athletic Complex.

St. Cloud (4-6-1) led 3-1 after Andrew Cummings goal 5:29 into the third period.

Breck (4-9-0) cut the deficit to one when Nate Miller scored with 7:16 to play. Luke Kern tied the game 57 seconds later, setting the stage for Amaro's goal after 21 more seconds expired.

Amato scored twice for the Mustangs while Cumming had two goals for St. Cloud, which had allowed four or more goals just twice previously.
