Hockey Night: Cretin-Derham Hall outlasts Stillwater in scorefest

Jan. 5: Jake Fisher's hat trick propels Raiders past the Ponies; Maple Grove beats Andover in first meeting since 2A title game thriller; East Grand Forks tops Thief River Falls

Cretin-Derham Hall 7, Stillwater 5

ST. PAUL - Easton Swift and Jake Fisher scored in the third period as Cretin-Derham Hall defeated Stillwater 7-5 in a matchup with wild momentum swings on Thursday night at Highland Arena.

No. 6-2A Cretin-Derham Hall (9-4-0) led 1-0 on Fisher's goal 1:02 into the opening period. Stillwater held leads of 2-1, 3-2, 4-2, and 5-4 before Swift's goal 4:36 into the third period finally put the Raiders back in front.

No. 11-2A Stillwater (6-2-0) led 5-4 lead following Brody Dustin's goal with 5:25 remaining in the second period.

No. 6-2A Cretin-Derham Hall (9-4-0) evened the game with Lucas Cernohous' goal with 4:16 left in the second.

Fisher completed a hat trick with an empty-net goal with one second remaining.

Attila Lippai had a goal and two assists for Cretin-Derham Hall.

Maple Grove 4, Andover 1

ANDOVER - Senior forward Jay Ellingson scored twice to power Maple Grove to a 4-1 win over Andover at the Andover Community Center.

The Northwest Suburban Conference rivals last met in the 2022 double-overtime state Class 2A championship game, which Andover won 6-5.

Cayden Casey gave No. 8-2A Andover (7-5-1) a 1-0 lead with 3:55 left in the second. Ellingson tied the score 52 seconds later. Finn Brink scored with 55 seconds remaining in the second period to give the Crimson a 2-1 lead.

Ellingson's second goal came with 12:16 left in the third, putting No. 3-2A Maple Grove (8-2-0) ahead 3-1.

Lucas Margenau's empty-net goal with 22 seconds left completed the scoring.

Jack Roach stopped 21 shots for Maple Grove. Beau Altman had 30 saves for Andover.

Minnetonka 5, Hill-Murray 0

MAPLEWOOD - Jack Sand scored twice in the second period and Hunter Bauer stopped 13 shots for the shutout to lead Minnetonka to a 5-0 win over Hill-Murray at Aldrich Arena.

Sand's goals came early and late in the middle period to put No. 1-2A Minnetonka (9-1-0) ahead 2-0. 

Javon Moore scored a power-play goal 1:50 into the third to make it 3-0. John Stout and Gavin Garry completed the scoring.

Liam Hupka had three assists while Moore and Alex Lunski each had two.

Jack Erickson stopped 42 shots for No. 16-2A Hill-Murray (3-7-0).

Benilde-St. Margaret's 4, St. Thomas Academy 2

MENDOTA HEIGHTS - Junior defenseman Mason Stenger scored twice to lead Benilde-St. Margaret's to a 4-2 win over St. Thomas Academy at St. Thomas Ice Arena.

Wes Berg gave No. 10-2A Benilde-St. Margaret's (7-4-0) a 1-0 lead 19 seconds into the second period.

Tommy Cronin scored a power-play goal with 12:02 left in the second to even the game at 1-1, but Drew Stewart and Stenger each scored power-play goals to give the Red Knights a 3-1 lead heading into the third.

Cronin brought No. 9-2A St. Thomas Academy (9-3-0) within a goal with 4:10 to play when he scored his team-leading 17th goal of the season. 

Stenger added an empty-net goal with 22 seconds left to ice it.

The victory was the sixth in seven games for the Red Knights.

East Grand Forks 3, Thief River Falls 1

THIEF RIVER FALLS - Grady Magner scored twice as East Grand Forks defeated Thief River Falls 3-1 in a matchup of longtime Section 8A rivals at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Magner scored on the power play with 13:25 remaining in the game to give the No. 5-1A Green Wave (6-6-0) a 2-1 lead. Brock Schultz completed the scoring with a short-handed goal with five seconds left.

Magner gave East Grand Forks (6-6-0) a 1-0 lead midway through the first period. Max Arlt scored shorthanded to even the score at 1-1 with 6:47 left in the first.

Connor Roff stopped 31 shots for No. 15-1A Thief River Falls (4-7-1). Chase Mero made 16 saves for the Green Wave.

Delano 3, Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato 1

DELANO - Aaron Lewis' goal in the first minute of the second period held up as the winner as Delano beat Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato a 3-1 at Delano Area Sports Arena in a matchup of Section 2A and Wright County Conference rivals.

No. 9-1A Delano (6-4-0) got a first-period goal from Teague Collings. Lewis' goal 46 seconds into the second period made it 2-0.

No. 11-1A Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato (8-2-1) got on the scoreboard with Braden Olson's goal with 4:59 left in the second.

Cade Bruett scored with 3:01 to play to complete the scoring.

Delano killed off five Dragons power plays, including four in the second period.

Eden Prairie 3, Prior Lake 1

PRIOR LAKE - Freshman forward Mason Moe's two power-play goals in the third period helped push Eden Prairie past Prior Lake 3-1 at Dakotah! Ice Center.

The game between Section 2AA rivals saw Prior Lake score the game's first goal when Brody Stephany scored with 8:54 to play in the second.

No. 17-2A Eden Prairie (5-6-1) tied the game with Billie Jacobson-Couch's goal with 4:40 remaining in the second.

Moe's first power-play goal came 1:13 into the third period. His second goal with the man advantage came with 1:48 to play.

Ben Mickett made 28 saves for Prior Lake (6-5-0) while Isaiah Paulnock stopped 17 shots for the Eagles.
