Hockey Night: Late goal lifts Hermantown past Rosemount

Hermantown 4, Rosemount 3

ROSEMOUNT - Junior forward Josh Kauppinen's goal with 1:16 remaining lifted Hermantown past Rosemount 4-3 on Monday at Rosemount Ice Arena in one of 10 games played statewide as more than 30 others were postponed because of inclement weather.

Rosemount (3-8-0) scored three unanswered goals in a span of 1:24 in the third period as it rallied to tie the score at 3-3 with 5:19 remaining. 

Kauppinen completed a 2-on-4 rush for the winning goal, knifing through the Rosemount defense and taking a feed at the right side of the net from Dallas Vieau.

No. 1-1A Hermantown (8-0-1), the defending state Class 1A champion, is one of just two unbeaten teams in the state, joining No. 2-1A Warroad (9-0-0).

Aaron Evejen scored in the second and Wyatt Carlson and Bradford Skytta added third-period goals as Hermantown built a 3-0 lead.

Eli Lewis, Jake Toll and Jackson Ganser scored third-period goals for Rosemount. Ganser's goal tied it at 3-3.

Grand Forks Red River (N.D) 3, East Grand Forks 2

EAST GRAND FORKS - A late comeback attempt fell short for East Grand Forks as it lost 3-2 to Grand Forks Red River (N.D.) at East Grand Forks Civic Arena.

East Grand Forks trailed 2-0 after the first period and 3-1 after the second, but Caleb Schmiedeberg pulled the No. 5-1A Green Wave (5-6-0) to within 3-2 with 4:42 remaining.

Grand Forks Red River, the No. 1-ranked team in North Dakota in the state's most recent coaches poll, improved to 8-1-0 with the victory. The Roughriders earned the Gambucci Cup that goes to the winner of the annual series between East Grand Forks and the two Grand Forks schools, Red River and Central.

Jace Van Eps also scored for East Grand Forks, pulling the Green Wave to within 2-1 midway through the second period.

East Grand Forks goaltender Chase Mero finished with 23 saves. Red River goaltender Jake Jenkins made 15 stops.

Detroit Lakes 7, Wadena-Deer Creek 3

DETROIT LAKES - Carter Bellefeuille scored twice and Tommy Suckert had three assists as Detroit Lakes beat upset-minded Wadena-Deer Creek 7-3 at Freeman Sports Arena.

Wadena-Deer Creek trailed 4-1 heading into the third period, when Connor Davis and Peyton Mithun scored in the opening 4:10 to pull  the Wolverines (7-3-0) to within 4-3. 

No. 10-1A Detroit Lakes (9-2-1) scored the final three goals, including two in the final 34 seconds.

Wadena-Deer Creek was coming off Thursday's 5-4 triumph against No. 14-1A Little Falls, the Wolverines' first win over the Flyers in 19 years.

Totino-Grace 4, Hopkins 2

HOPKINS - Justin Kuharski and Carson Border scored in a span of 2:20 late in the third period to boost Totino-Grace to a 4-2 triumph over Hopkins at Hopkins Pavillion Ice Arena.

Kuharski broke a 2-2 tie with 4:19 remaining and Border all but clinched the victory by scoring with 1:59 left. Border's goal was his second of the game.

Leo Carter and Zander Brown scored-first period goals for Hopkins (2-6-0) as it built a 2-1 lead. 

Colton Horak's second-period goal pulled Totino-Grace (2-6-0) into a 2-2 tie.

Red Lake Falls 6, Mayville/Portland (N.D.) 2

RED LAKE FALLS - Sophomore Gavin Girdler scored a goal and added four assists and his brother Evan Girdler, a senior, had a goal and three assists to lead Red Lake Falls to a 6-2 win over Mayville/Portland (N.D.) at Cardin-Hunt Arena.

Gavin Girdler's five points give him 39 for the season, third-most in the state. Evan Girdler is fifth in the state with 36 points.

Red Lake Falls (7-2-0) outshot Mayville/Portland (6-2-0) 39-30.

Thief River Falls 8, Crookston 0

CROOKSTON - Tysen Loeffler scored three goals and Braydin Lund had two as Thief River Falls rolled past Crookston 8-0 at the Crookston Sports Center.

Loeffler, a senior forward, scored all three of his goals by the 4:49 mark of the second period, helping give the No. 15-1A Prowlers (3-6-1) a 4-0 lead.

Lund, a junior forward, scored in the second and third periods.

Connor Roff made 13 saves to earn the shutout for Thief River Falls. Jaren Bailey stopped 24 shots for Crookston (1-9-0).

Park Rapids 6, Breckenridge/Wahpeton 0

PARK RAPIDS - Jeron Pinoniemi scored twice and Joey Hillukka had four assists as Park Rapids cruised past Breckenridge/Wahpeton 6-0 at Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

Pinoniemi scored as part of a three-goal first period for the Panthers (3-3-0) and his goal early in the second made it 4-0.

Hillukka's assists give him five this season and he leads Park Rapids with eight points.

Sawyer Torkelson made 10 saves to earn the shutout, his first of the season. Andrew Withuski made 26 saves for Breckenridge/Wahpeton (0-9-0).
